BEng Computer Systems Engineering

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

The University of Sheffield

Program Overview

Learn about the fields that are essential to computer systems, including mathematics, control systems, embedded systems and programming. Then go on to applied work that brings the concepts together in a practical way, and continue to study advanced modules in specialist areas such as system design and security and intelligent systems.

The BEng Computer Systems Engineering program at the University of Sheffield is a three-year undergraduate course that integrates design, robotics, and computer programming to prepare students for careers in engineering and programming. Developed in collaboration with industry partners and informed by leading research, the curriculum provides a comprehensive education in both computer software and hardware, emphasizing systems design and practical application.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

In the first year, students establish a solid foundation in the theory of complex electro-mechanical systems, focusing on robotic systems control and collaborative design of electro-mechanical systems. The second year introduces core modules such as programming in languages like C++, Python, and Java, alongside mathematics and data modeling. This year also features a practical project where students design systems using 3D CAD tools and build their designs in the university's iForge Makerspace. In the final year, students engage in advanced modules, including intelligent systems and cybersecurity, and undertake an individual project that allows for in-depth exploration of a chosen area, guided by academic staff.

Progression & Future Opportunities

Graduates of this program are well-prepared for diverse roles in the technology and engineering sectors, including positions such as systems engineer, software developer, and embedded systems designer. The university's strong industry connections and emphasis on practical experience enhance employability. Notably, 90% of graduates are in work or further education 15 months after finishing the course, with alumni working at companies like Rolls-Royce, Siemens, and Airbus.
