The University of Sheffield

Program Overview

You'll learn to understand the theoretical principles underlying a problem, and how to engineer a solution. You'll also become familiar with the practical issues involved in developing reliable, effective software systems in business or industry. As well as being paid a salary during your placement you will pay reduced tuition fees for that year.

The MComp Computer Science with an Industrial Placement Year at the University of Sheffield is a five-year integrated master's program designed to provide students with a comprehensive education in computer science, enriched by a year of practical industry experience. The curriculum encompasses core topics such as programming, algorithms, and data structures, while offering opportunities to explore advanced areas like speech recognition, voice synthesis, text summarization, and machine learning.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

A distinctive feature of this program is the year-long industrial placement, typically undertaken in the third year, where students gain invaluable hands-on experience by working within the industry. This placement allows students to apply their academic knowledge to real-world projects, enhancing their practical skills and professional networks. The university supports students in securing placements and has connections with various companies, including Deloitte, The Walt Disney Company, PayPal, and Samsung SDS Europe, where students have previously completed placements.

In the final year, students have the opportunity to work alongside research staff as part of a group research project. Additionally, they can participate in Genesys Solutions, the UK's first student-run software development organization, where they pitch, develop, and market ideas for startup companies, thereby gaining experience in agile software engineering and lean startup practices.

Progression & Future Opportunities

Graduates of this program are well-prepared for diverse roles in the technology sector, including positions such as software developer, systems analyst, and IT consultant. The industrial placement year significantly enhances employability by providing hands-on experience and industry connections. The University of Sheffield's Department of Computer Science is recognized for its strong industry links, offering students exposure to leading technology companies. Additionally, the program is accredited by the British Computer Society (BCS), fully meeting the requirements for Chartered Information Technology Professional (CITP) status and partially meeting the requirements for Chartered Engineer (CEng) status.
