The programme is ideal if you’re aiming for a career as a data scientist, software developer, or simply want to harness the power of data to solve real-world problems and make smart, impactful decisions.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1
You’ll start by building a solid base. Core subjects like Data Modelling and Analysis, Introduction to Database Technology, Programming, Mathematics for Computing, Object-Oriented Programming, and Systems Analysis and Design will give you hands-on experience with programming, mathematical thinking, and how data and software systems work. This year sets you up with the essential skills every confident data scientist needs.

Year 2
The focus shifts to deeper technical skills. You’ll explore Advanced Data Modelling and Analysis, Data Skills, Data Structures and Algorithms, Introduction to Computer Systems, and Machine Learning. Alongside these, you’ll choose an optional module—such as a Micro-placement, Multivariable Calculus, or Statistical Inference—giving you the flexibility to align your studies with your career goals or personal interests.

Year 3
You’ll advance into more specialised systems and software topics. Compulsory modules include Computer Networking, Database Management, Information Security, and Software Engineering I. On top of these, you’ll get to choose from optional modules like Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, Cloud Computing, Deep Learning and Generative AI, Mobile Computing, or Natural Language Processing Applications. This is your chance to tailor your degree towards the latest cutting-edge areas in data science.

Year 4
In your final year, you’ll dive into Further Machine Learning and Analytics, select an additional advanced option, and bring everything together with the BSc Data Science Project. This capstone project is your opportunity to take on a real-world challenge, apply your skills, and showcase your expertise—whether to employers or as a springboard to postgraduate study.

Graduate Prospects

While course-specific data for Data Science is still emerging, broader outcomes for Birkbeck computer science graduates are strong:

  • Around 80% are in work or further study within 15 months of graduating

  • 68–73% rate their experience positively in areas like teaching quality, learning opportunities, and fairness of assessment

This means you can feel confident that the degree equips you with both the knowledge and practical skills to succeed in your chosen path.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

Students at Birkbeck don’t just learn theory—they build real, practical skills from day one. Classes take place in labs, where you’ll work directly with industry-standard programming languages like Python, R, and Java. These tools are at the heart of modern data work, whether you’re collecting, storing, analyzing, or visualizing information. What’s unique is the flipped-classroom style: you prepare ahead of time by watching videos or reading, and then use class time to actively solve problems. It means your learning is hands-on, collaborative, and focused on real-world challenges.

Here’s what makes experiential learning at Birkbeck stand out for this degree:

  • Dedicated computer labs: Many modules include lab-based sessions in fully equipped PC labs, where you’ll be coding, analyzing, and experimenting in real time.

  • Course support on Moodle: Every course and module comes with its own online space that includes handbooks, lecture recordings, and tutorial materials. It’s your central hub for staying organized and supported.

  • Personal tutor & support network: From the start, you’re paired with a personal tutor and introduced to the library, IT services, study skills support, and even wellbeing resources—so you feel prepared before lectures even begin.

  • Direct links to research at BIDA: The program is closely connected to the Birkbeck Institute for Data Analytics, which works on cutting-edge projects like cybersecurity, environmental monitoring, and artificial intelligence. It’s an opportunity to see how classroom knowledge connects to live research.

  • Flexible, evening-friendly schedule: Classes are usually held in the evenings, with some daytime options too. This makes study accessible, especially if you’re working or managing other commitments.

  • Interactive teaching style: You won’t just sit through lectures. Learning includes seminars, tutorials, and practical classes—so you’re part of an active, collaborative environment.

  • Flipped-classroom engagement: By preparing before class, you use lecture time to practice and apply concepts, especially in programming and data analysis.

  • Continuous improvement through feedback: Student feedback is taken seriously at Birkbeck. Regular surveys help refine and improve teaching and learning, so your voice helps shape the course experience.
