You’ll also choose one optional module—options include Micro-placement, Multivariable Calculus, or Statistical Inference—allowing you to tailor your studies toward your interests or career goals.

Year 3

This year extends into systems and software sophistication: compulsory modules include Computer Networking, Database Management (Level 5), Information Security (Level 5), and Software Engineering I. You’ll also select one or two advanced optional modules such as Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, Cloud Computing, Deep Learning and Generative AI, Mobile Computing, or Natural Language Processing Applications, diving deeper into cutting-edge specialisms.

Year 4

In your final year, you'll tackle Further Machine Learning and Analytics, choose an additional option module, and take on the BSc Data Science Project. This capstone project gives you the unique opportunity to apply your skills to a real data science challenge—demonstrating your readiness to employers or postgraduate study.

"Data modelling, programming (Python, Java, R), machine learning, database systems, software engineering, AI applications (e.g., deep learning and NLP), cloud computing, and information security."

Learning Outcomes

"You will develop robust analytical, statistical, and computational skills, understand modern data science techniques, and be able to design, implement, and evaluate systems and models that address real-world data challenges."

(These reflect programme aims such as gaining strong programming/data analysis skills using Java, Python, R, alongside computational and mathematical foundations.)

Professional Alignment (Accreditation)

The programme conforms with Institute of Coding standards for programming and software engineering modules, ensuring industry-relevant skills and recognition.

Reputation (Employability Rankings)

Though course-specific metrics for Data Science aren’t yet available, broader data shows that 80% of Birkbeck computer science graduates are employed or in further study within 15 months of finishing their degree, and 68–73% rate the course positively in aspects like teaching quality, learning opportunities, and assessment fairness.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

Students develop practical skills using industry-standard programming languages and engaging in active, in-person learning—classes are held in labs, with many modules including laboratory sessions. They'll learn Python, R, and Java for tasks like data collection, storage, analysis, and visualization—skills essential for tackling real-world data challenges. Birkbeck adopts a flipped-classroom approach in programming modules, where you prepare in advance (by watching videos and reading) and use class time for active problem-solving—so your learning is practical and engaged.

Transitioning into the details:

Here’s what makes the experiential learning powerful and concrete at Birkbeck for this degree:

  • Dedicated computer labs: Many computing modules include laboratory-based exercises in networked PC labs—so you’re coding, analyzing, and experimenting in real time.

  • Course-support via Moodle: You’ll have a dedicated Moodle space for your course and individual modules, complete with course handbooks, lecture recordings, and tutorial materials. This is your go-to hub for learning and support.

  • Personal tutor & learning support: Right from the start, you’re paired with a personal tutor and introduced to library services, IT support, study aids, and wellbeing resources—even before lectures begin.

  • Access to Birkbeck Institute for Data Analytics (BIDA): The degree ties closely with BIDA, a research hub focusing on areas like the Threat Intelligence Lab (cyber-security), coastal environmental sensing, AI containment, and more. It’s a real doorway into applied research environments.

  • Evening-friendly, flexible schedule: Classes are scheduled in the evenings (and some daytime options), keeping education accessible—and carefully designed for working students or those with daytime commitments.

  • Interactive learning formats: Lecture time includes seminars, tutorials, and practical classes—not just one-way lectures—making learning collaborative and hands-on.

  • Flipped-classroom engagement: You prepare before class and use lecture time actively—strengthening your practical skills like programming and data analysis.

  • Supportive feedback loops: Birkbeck values student feedback; it's gathered regularly via online surveys and used to continuously refine teaching and learning quality
