Artificial Intelligence and Data Science BSc Honours

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Middlesex University London

Program Overview

Curriculum Structure

Year 1

Your first year is all about building strong foundations. You’ll learn to code (especially in Python) and start exploring how AI, data science, and algorithms connect in practice. Modules such as Programming for Data Communications and Networks, Introduction to AI and Data Science, Algorithms and Data Analysis, Foundations of Computing, and Web Applications and Databases will help you get comfortable with writing code, understanding data flow, creating algorithms, and working with databases and web-based systems.

Year 2

In your second year, things get more specialised. You’ll take your programming and data skills to the next level, focusing on real applications of AI and machine learning. Modules like Machine Learning and Other AI Techniques, Large Language Models, Data Analysis for Enterprise Modelling, and Current Trends in AI give you the chance to work with larger models, experiment with LLMs, and see how businesses use data analytics to make decisions. You’ll also look at new and emerging technologies shaping the AI world right now.

Optional Placement Year

Between your second and final year, you can choose to spend a full year in industry. This placement is a chance to gain real-world experience, apply your skills in a professional setting, and build valuable industry connections. Employers see this as a huge advantage because you’ll graduate with both a strong academic background and hands-on workplace experience.

Final Year

In your final year, you’ll bring everything together and take on more independence. You’ll complete a major individual project on a real AI or data science challenge, while also diving deeper into advanced topics. Core modules include the Undergraduate Individual Project and Current Trends in AI, alongside optional choices such as Artificial Intelligence in Robotics, Mathematics of AI in Data Science, or Defensive Security. This is your chance to specialise and show off your expertise.

Focus Areas

Throughout the degree, you’ll build skills in:

  • Programming (with Python and beyond)

  • Machine Learning and AI Techniques

  • Large Language Models (LLMs)

  • Data Analytics and Visualisation

  • AI Applications like robotics and natural language processing

  • Enterprise Modelling and applied AI in business contexts

Learning Outcomes

By the time you graduate, you’ll be able to:

  • Design, build, and evaluate AI and data science systems

  • Apply machine learning algorithms to real-world problems

  • Work with and fine-tune large language models

  • Manage, analyse, and visualise complex datasets

  • Carry out independent, professional-level projects

  • Build employability skills through placements, teamwork, and practical learning

Professional Alignment

While this degree isn’t tied to a specific external accreditation (such as BCS or IEEE), it’s built with industry expectations in mind. You’ll be working with up-to-date tools like Python and large language models, and the placement option means you’ll graduate with practical, job-ready experience.

Reputation & Employability

Middlesex University is known for its focus on employability. Graduates from its Science and Technology faculty have gone on to work with organisations like KPMG, Brighthouse, Leapfrog, and ITP Publishing. The degree is structured to give you both immediate career opportunities in tech and a strong foundation if you want to continue with postgraduate study.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

Software and Programming Tools
From your very first year, you’ll be coding in Python and learning how to design AI and data science systems. As you progress, you’ll dive into topics like large language models (LLMs), distributed processing, natural language processing (NLP), computer vision, and even ontology management. The focus is on making sure you’re confident with the same tools and techniques used in the tech industry today.

Labs and Specialist Facilities
You’ll have access to modern spaces like the Ritterman labs and networking labs, plus specialist areas for Virtual & Augmented Reality, Robotics, Brain–Computer Interfaces, and Internet of Things systems. Computing students also benefit from dedicated lecture theatres designed with their courses in mind.

Group Projects & Individual Projects
Teamwork is built into the course. You’ll take part in group exercises and, in the later years, work with others to develop more complex systems. In your final year, you’ll take on an individual project with guidance from a faculty supervisor — a chance to showcase everything you’ve learned by solving a substantial AI or data science challenge.

Industrial Placement Option
Between your second and third year, you can choose to take a year-long placement in industry. This is a chance to gain real work experience, build professional connections, and see how the theory and skills from your course play out in practice.

Assessments & Feedback
Assessment is mainly through coursework — building software, writing reports, giving presentations, and collaborating in groups. Labs play a key role in helping you prepare, offering feedback and support throughout the learning process. When it comes to your final project, you’ll also have the chance to present and defend your work in a viva (oral exam).

Library & Digital Learning Support
The Sheppard Library is open long hours (7am–11pm during term), giving you a flexible study space whenever you need it. You’ll also have access to free 24-hour laptop loans, full desktop software, WiFi, and printing — making sure you’ve got the tech support to keep your projects moving.

Industry Engagement & Start-ups
The MDXworks employability service connects you with placements, live projects, and networking opportunities to get your foot in the door with employers. If you’re interested in starting your own business, the MDXcelerator programme provides mentoring, support, and even grants of up to £15,000 to help you get your idea off the ground.

Academic Staff & Research Environment
You’ll be taught by lecturers who are not only experienced teachers but also active researchers in computing, mathematics, and informatics. As you move through the degree, you’ll also get the chance to explore specialist areas such as generative AI, robotics, and biologically-inspired algorithms — keeping your learning at the cutting edge.

Progression & Future Opportunities

Graduates from this degree often step into exciting roles such as Data Scientist, Machine Learning Engineer, AI Developer, or Business Intelligence Analyst. Because the programme is built around real-world tools and projects, you’ll be ready to work in established tech companies, government organisations, or fast-growing startups—and you can expect to enter the job market with competitive salaries in the AI and data science space.

University Services that Support Your Career

  • MDXworks employability service: From day one, you’ll have access to career support. That includes help finding placements, networking events, real project experience, and connections with more than 1,000 industry partners in London and worldwide.

  • MDXcelerator: If you’re more entrepreneurial, this service offers mentoring and even grants of up to £15,000 to bring your own business idea to life.

Employment Prospects & Salary Potential
While exact salary ranges aren’t published for this course alone, Middlesex graduates are well-regarded and have gone on to work with leading employers such as KPMG, Brighthouse, Leapfrog, and ITP Publishing. An optional year-long work placement (between years 2 and 3) adds even more value by giving you hands-on experience that makes you stand out to employers.

Strong University–Industry Partnerships
Middlesex has established links with top employers, which translates into placement opportunities, live projects, and graduate roles. The fact that alumni have secured positions at companies like KPMG and others shows that what you learn here directly connects with what the industry needs.

Future-Proof Skills
This programme is continually updated to reflect the latest developments in AI and data science. You’ll work with neural networks, large language models, and current AI/ML algorithms, building the exact skills that employers are looking for today. Plus, Middlesex’s reputation—especially within London’s vibrant tech scene—adds real value to your CV.

Graduate Outcomes
By the time you finish, you’ll have both the theory and the practical skills employers want: coding, machine learning, data science workflows, and more. If you choose the optional industrial placement, you’ll also graduate with a strong portfolio that shows off your applied experience. Optional modules—like robotics, cybersecurity, or biologically inspired algorithms—let you tailor your studies to areas that can make you stand out in the job market.

Further Study and Progression
Your journey doesn’t have to stop at graduation. Many students go on to study a Master’s degree—whether that’s in Artificial Intelligence and Data Science, Computer Science, or Machine Learning—at Middlesex or elsewhere. If research is your passion, a PhD in AI, robotics, or computational modelling could be the next step. There are also shorter postgraduate certificates and advanced training options that allow you to deepen specialist skills in areas like cybersecurity, deep learning, or large language models.
