This degree gives you a rock-solid foundation in computer science while equipping you with the latest statistical, predictive, and machine learning tools. You’ll learn how to turn raw information into meaningful insights and solutions—perfect if you’re naturally curious, analytical, and excited about AI, big data, and real-world problem-solving.
Curriculum Structure
Year 1
You’ll begin with the basics of computer programming, learning to code and solve practical problems straight away. Alongside this, you’ll cover how computers actually work and sharpen your maths skills to support your data studies. Modules like Systems Analysis and Design show you how to plan and develop systems effectively, while Academic and Professional Development prepares you for the workplace with CV-building, networking opportunities, and an understanding of computing careers.
Year 2
The second year is all about taking your skills further. Practical Project Management and Professional Development get you ready for placements and industry collaboration. At the same time, you’ll dive into Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, where you’ll discover how to spot patterns in complex datasets, and Data Analytics Techniques and Programming, giving you hands-on experience in processing and interpreting data.
Year 3
Your final year brings everything together. You’ll complete an independent project—solving a computing problem and showing off your technical, organizational, and communication skills. You’ll also learn how to design and run scalable databases, explore the world of Business Intelligence and Data Analytics with a focus on data visualization, and deepen your knowledge of Artificial Intelligence, exploring both theory and the latest research.
You can also shape your degree further with optional modules such as Applied Statistics or Information Systems Management.

You won’t just be studying data science in theory — you’ll be living it from the very start. From day one, you’ll move beyond the slides and straight into practice: writing code, building statistical models, and designing intelligent systems in professional-standard environments. Every step of the way, you’ll be guided by staff whose own research feeds directly into your learning, so what you study is always current and relevant. And with the chance to take a placement year or study abroad, your education stretches far beyond the classroom and into the real world.
Here’s how that plays out in practice:
Software tools and platforms: You’ll work with industry-relevant programming languages, data platforms, and predictive tools that transform raw data into meaningful insights. These are the same kinds of technologies employers use every day.
Placement year opportunity: Opt for the four-year pathway and gain a paid placement in industry. It’s your chance to put your knowledge to the test, experience the workplace firsthand, and graduate with the kind of CV that stands out.
Study abroad programs: Take your skills global by studying at one of NTU’s partner institutions. It’s a powerful way to build confidence, broaden your horizons, and add international experience to your CV.
Project-based modules: Courses like Foundations of Computer Programming, Systems Analysis and Design, Data Analytics Techniques and Programming, and Foundations of AI and Machine Learning challenge you to solve real-world problems. You’ll design, program, and collaborate just as you would in a professional team.
Professional development support: Through the Practical Project Management and Professional Development module, you’ll sharpen the skills that matter most for your career — from presenting with impact, to writing a strong CV, to succeeding in assessment centres.
Placement support infrastructure: NTU’s dedicated Placements Office will help you secure a placement that fits your ambitions. Many students even turn these opportunities into job offers, giving them a head start in their careers.
Expert teaching: You’ll be taught by passionate researchers like Associate Professor Dr. Isibor Kennedy Ihianle, whose work in AI, machine learning, and computational intelligence ensures you’re always learning from the cutting edge.
As a BSc (Hons) Data Science graduate from NTU, you’ll step into the world of work with real experience and the technical skills that employers are actively looking for. Data-driven careers are growing fast, and you’ll be ready to take on roles such as Business Analyst, Demand & Forecasting Assistant, IT Intern, and many more. Thanks to NTU’s strong employer connections and focus on hands-on learning, you’ll be well-prepared to stand out in a competitive job market.
