BSc Hons Data Science

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Nottingham

Program Overview

This BSc (Hons) Data Science at NTU equips you with a strong foundation in computer science and advanced statistical and predictive tools, helping you turn raw data into actionable insights. It’s perfect for curious, analytical thinkers who want to master AI, machine learning, and data-driven solutions for real-world challenges.

Curriculum Structure:

Year 1

You’ll start with Foundations of Computer Programming, diving into high-level programming to solve real problems, alongside Foundations of Computer Technology and Mathematics, where you’ll grasp how computers work and hone your mathematical reasoning. You’ll also study Systems Analysis and Design, learning the principles and tools used in systems development, supported by Academic and Professional Development, which boosts your employability through CV-building, industry conventions, and understanding computing professions.

Year 2

This year continues to build your skillset with Practical Project Management and Professional Development, where you’ll learn to manage projects, write reports, and prepare for placements. Alongside, engage with Foundations of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, mastering techniques to uncover patterns in large datasets, and Data Analytics Techniques and Programming, which deepens your practical toolkit for data processing and pattern extraction.

Year 3

In your final year, you’ll take a Project, investigating and solving computing problems while developing your organizational and communication skills. You'll also learn Distributed Database Engineering, exploring scalable data systems, Business Intelligence and Data Analytics, focusing on data visualisation and decision support in business, and Artificial Intelligence, where you'll dive into AI theories, methods, and current research areas.

(You also have optional modules like Applied Statistics and Information Systems Management to further shape your focus.)

Focus Areas: “Foundations in programming, AI and machine learning, data analytics, database systems, and business intelligence.”

Learning Outcomes: “You’ll graduate able to program and analyse systems, apply statistical models, manage data securely, design intelligent solutions, and communicate insights clearly.”

Professional Alignment (Accreditation): NTU isn’t just teaching theory—they embed sandwich placements, giving you real-world experience and often leading directly to job offers.

Reputation (Employability Rankings):
NTU is proudly 1st in the UK for Employability, voted by students in the Uni Compare 2024 rankings—plus ranked top for course quality and in the top ten for accommodation.
It also holds a Gold rating in the Teaching Excellence Framework and is ranked 46th overall in the 2026 Complete University Guide.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

You’ll dive into real-world data science from day one — where abstract concepts become working solutions. This isn’t about just reading slides, it's about writing code, building statistical models, and designing intelligent systems in professional-standard environments. You’ll hone your technical skills using industry-relevant tools and software, guided by expert staff whose research informs your learning. And with options like a placement year or study abroad, your education extends beyond the classroom into the world.

Transitioning now into how that plays out in practice:

You’ll get hands-on exposure through:

  • Software tools and platforms: Learn to work with statistical, algorithmic, and predictive tools to turn raw data into actionable insights.
(Note: NTU doesn’t list specific software names, but emphasizes use of “industry-relevant tools” — typically including programming languages and data platforms.)

  • Placement year opportunity: Choose the four-year track that includes a paid placement year, giving you direct exposure to industry environments and boosting employability.

  • Study abroad programs: Broaden your perspective and apply your skills globally at partner institutions — ideal for personal growth and future CV strength.

  • Project-based modules: Modules like Foundations of Computer Programming, Systems Analysis and Design, Data Analytics Techniques and Programming, and Foundations of AI and Machine Learning engage you in solving real-world problems through individual and collaborative programming and design work.

  • Professional development support: In your Practical Project Management and Professional Development module, you’ll build project-management, presentation, CV-writing, and selection-assessment skills — all within a supportive learning structure.

  • Placement support infrastructure: The university’s Placements Office actively helps you secure a relevant industrial placement, increasing your chances for graduate employment and potentially turning placements into job offers.

  • Teaching informed by research active staff: The BSc is led by experts, including Associate Professor Dr. Isibor Kennedy Ihianle, whose work in AI, machine learning, and computational intelligence offers cutting-edge insights and project opportunities.
