BSc (Hons) Data Science and AI

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of the Arts London

Program Overview

The BSc (Hons) Data Science and AI at University of the Arts London equips students with both technical expertise and creative problem-solving skills in a rapidly evolving field. Ideal for those curious about data, AI, and ethical computing, the program blends computational, statistical, and design approaches to prepare students for real-world challenges.

Curriculum Structure:

Year 0 (Optional Foundation Year):
Students begin with Foundational Programming One and Two, building core coding skills using interactive development environments and exploring basic algorithms for creative applications. Units like Computing Histories and Computing Project: Introducing Computing One & Two help students understand computing’s historical context while applying coding to interactive graphics, sound, and multimedia projects. Foundational Maths for Computing ensures they gain the mathematical grounding necessary for later studies.

Year 1:
In the first year, learners explore Methods 1: Introducing Computer & Data Science, developing literacy in programming languages such as Python and JavaScript, alongside fundamental mathematics. Through Critical 1: Mathematics and Statistics for Data Science and Critical Project 1: Data, Representation and Visualisation, students learn to organise, analyse, and visualise complex datasets. Additional units, like Methods 2: Data Applications in Wearable and IoT and Critical Project 2: Database Systems for Data Science, provide hands-on experience with IoT technologies, cloud databases, and project-based learning.

Year 2:
The second year emphasizes advanced computational and entrepreneurial skills. Methods 3: Algorithms and Complexity develops students’ understanding of algorithmic efficiency and potential societal impacts. Critical 3: Organisations and Computing Entrepreneurship encourages exploration of organisational structures and start-up opportunities, while other projects focus on applying machine learning and AI techniques in real-world scenarios.

Focus Areas: Data science, artificial intelligence, machine learning, statistical analysis, ethical computing, project-based learning

Learning Outcomes: Apply coding and computational methods to data analysis, develop AI solutions, understand ethical implications, work collaboratively, and communicate technical information effectively

Professional Alignment (Accreditation): Industry-informed curriculum, preparation for tech sector roles, opportunities for internships and entrepreneurial projects

Reputation (Employability Rankings): Recognised for creative computing excellence, strong graduate employability through practical, industry-focused training

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

At the University of the Arts London, the BSc (Hons) Data Science and AI program is designed to immerse students in hands-on, practical learning from the very start. You’ll gain real-world skills by working on live projects, exploring ethical implications of data use, and applying computational techniques across diverse applications. UAL’s Creative Computing Institute (CCI) provides a collaborative environment where students can experiment with industry-standard tools, develop coding proficiency, and connect with peers, academics, and researchers who are passionate about data science and AI.

Your experiential learning will be enriched through access to advanced facilities and resources, ensuring you graduate ready for professional roles or further research:

  • Project-Based Learning: Work on a variety of real-world computing and data science projects, both individually and in groups.

  • Programming and Tools: Learn core programming languages such as Python and JavaScript, and use industry-standard software for data analysis, visualization, and database management.

  • Ethical and Responsible AI: Engage in projects addressing data governance, privacy, and computational ethics to understand the societal impact of data.

  • Interdisciplinary Applications: Explore data applications in wearable technology and IoT, combining data science with creative computing and physical computing projects.

  • Industry Engagement: Participate in industry talks, optional internships, and gain access to entrepreneurial support and incubator programs.

  • Facilities and Resources: Classes are held at the central London High Holborn campus, with workshops and resources across other CCI sites in Peckham Road, Greencoat, and Eagle Wharf.

  • Community and Support: Join the CCI online community for peer support, mentoring, and collaboration with fellow students, academics, and researchers.

  • Research and Laboratories: Access dedicated computing labs and technical workshops for hands-on experimentation and project development.

  • Digital Portfolios: Document your projects and learning in professional portfolios, showcasing skills to potential employers or for further study.

This combination of technical training, collaborative projects, ethical insight, and industry exposure ensures that students not only learn data science and AI theoretically but also gain the practical experience highly valued by employers worldwide.
