BSc Hons Physical Education

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Worcester

Program Overview

This BSc (Hons) Physical Education degree prepares you for careers in teaching, sports coaching, physical activity delivery, and health & wellbeing promotion. It’s ideal if you enjoy sport, movement, health, and working with people, and want a qualification that combines theoretical knowledge, practical skills, and real-world experience.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1
You start with core foundations covering broad aspects of PE and coaching: modules such as Principles of Sports Coaching and PE, Physical Activity, Health, Wellbeing, Scientific Principles in Teaching and Coaching, and Adapted Physical Activity, Sport and Disability. This gives you a base in understanding human movement, health, physical activity, and inclusive sport. Optional modules like Learning to be a Sports Professional or Fundamentals of Sports Performance Analysis let you explore coaching, performance, or adaptation early on.

Year 2
In the second year you build on that foundation with advanced work: mandatory modules include Learning and Teaching through Games, Advanced Scientific Principles in Teaching and Coaching, and Creating Successful Research. Optional modules can include Analysing Social Issues in Sport, Teaching Special Educational Needs and Disability PE in Schools, Teaching and Coaching Athletics, Outdoor and Adventurous Activities in the Curriculum, Gymnastics and Dance in Schools, or Swimming in School. This flexibility helps you start shaping the kind of PE or coaching career you want.

Year 3
In the final year the focus shifts to specialisation, professional readiness, and independent research. You complete an Independent Research Project in Physical Education (or in Adapted PE), and choose optional modules such as professional placement, school-based placement, Contemporary Issues in Disability PE, 14–19 PE and Sport, Leading and Developing PE in Primary School, Engaging Young People in Physical Activity, The Developing Child, or modules analysing social issues in sport. This year applies your learning in research, teaching/coaching, and practical experience to prepare you for a career after graduation.

Focus areas
Physical education pedagogy; human movement, health and wellbeing; inclusive PE and disability sport; coaching and physical activity leadership; sports science; curriculum planning for PE (games, athletics, dance, outdoor/adventure activities); research methods in sports and physical education; placements in schools or community settings.

Learning outcomes
Graduates will be able to plan and deliver physical education and physical activity programmes across age groups and abilities; understand scientific principles underlying human movement, health and wellbeing; adapt sessions for inclusion and disability; conduct research in physical education; support development of sport, health, and wellbeing at school or community level; and be ready for roles in teaching, coaching, or sports development.

Professional alignment (career readiness)
This degree prepares you for careers as a secondary or primary Physical Education teacher (often via postgraduate teacher training), sports coach, youth or community activity leader, disability inclusion coach, fitness instructor, sports development officer, or other roles related to health, sport, and wellbeing.

Reputation (employability / quality)
The programme is delivered by experienced PE and sport-science practitioners, uses modern facilities (dance studios, gyms, outdoor activity centres), and combines theoretical and practical training — making graduates employable in education, sports coaching, health, and community sectors. The flexibility of optional modules supports either a teaching pathway or a coaching/fitness-oriented career.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

The BSc (Hons) Physical Education at the University of Worcester is designed to prepare you for careers in PE teaching, sports coaching, and physical activity management — combining academic study with extensive practical experience. From the start, you study the full primary and secondary PE curriculum, covering games, dance, athletics, outdoor activities, and adapted PE, and you have many opportunities to practise teaching and coaching in real-world settings.

Throughout the course, you’ll engage in lectures, seminars, practical workshops, coaching sessions, and school/community placements, building hands-on skills in physical education, coaching, and leadership.

Key experiential features include:

  • Comprehensive curriculum coverage — learn all areas of the school PE curriculum, including inclusive and adapted PE

  • Practical workshops and coaching sessions — develop teaching and coaching skills through hands-on sessions

  • Placements and real-world teaching/practice experience — school-based or community placements to gain real teaching/coaching exposure

  • Specialisation options — such as Adapted Physical Education, equipping you to work with individuals with disabilities or special needs

  • Flexibility to combine PE with coaching or sport-related work — explore areas like sports development, health and wellbeing, or youth sport

  • Excellent sport facilities — including sports halls, gym equipment, and outdoor activity centres to support practical training

Progression & Future Opportunities

With this degree you’ll graduate with knowledge and skills in physical education, sport pedagogy, health, coaching, and school-level PE teaching practices. Typical career paths include:

  • Physical education teacher (after further teacher-training if required)

  • Sports coach — in schools, clubs, community sports, recreation centres

  • Sports development officer or activity coordinator

  • Youth or community sports worker / fitness instructor / wellness or health promotion roles

  • Leisure, sport & recreation management or coaching roles in private & public sports organisations

Because the degree blends theory (exercise science, pedagogy, health, social issues) and practical training, you’ll have flexibility to work in teaching or in broader sport/health/leisure-related sectors.

Progression & Future Opportunities:

  • Practical & theoretical training: You study sport, exercise and pedagogy alongside teaching methods, social issues in PE, health and fitness — a broad foundation useful for teaching or coaching.

  • Work-related learning and placements: Many programs build in work placements, volunteer work, school-based PE delivery or community sport settings — giving real-world experience before graduation.

  • Versatile skillset: You graduate with skills beyond sport — communication, leadership, planning, health/wellbeing awareness, group-management and teaching/coaching skills — valuable in jobs inside and outside sport.

  • Strong employability record: Physical Education graduates typically have high employment or further-study rates soon after graduation, reflecting the demand for skilled professionals in sport, education, and health sectors.

Further Academic Progression:
After finishing BSc (Hons) Physical Education, you can:

  • Pursue teacher-training (e.g., PGCE or equivalent) to become a qualified PE teacher in schools — combining your PE background with formal teaching credentials.

  • Go for postgraduate studies in sports science, coaching, sports development, health & fitness, or related fields (exercise science, sports management, physiotherapy-related studies), depending on your interest.

  • Explore roles beyond teaching or coaching — such as sport development, leisure management, community health & fitness, youth work, or sports administration — using your versatile skills and training.
