BSc Hons Physical Education and Sports Coaching Science

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Worcester

Program Overview

This BSc (Hons) Physical Education and Sports Coaching degree prepares you for a career in sports coaching, physical education teaching, and roles in sport & health-related industries. It blends scientific understanding of human movement, health and wellbeing with practical coaching and teaching skills, so you graduate ready to train athletes, lead PE classes, or work in sports development.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1
You begin with core grounding in sport & physical education through modules such as Principles of Sports Coaching and PE, Physical Activity, Health, Wellbeing, Scientific Principles in Teaching and Coaching, and Adapted Physical Activity, Sport and Disability. These give you understanding of physiology, health, inclusive sport, and coaching fundamentals. You also have options like Learning to be a Sports Professional or Fundamentals of Sports Performance Analysis, where you start exploring specific interests — such as performance analysis or early coaching approaches.

Year 2
The second year builds on that foundation with more advanced and applied work: for example, Learning and Teaching through Games, Advanced Scientific Principles in Teaching and Coaching, and Creating Successful Research. Alongside, you can choose optional modules depending on your interests — including sport-specific coaching, disability PE, outdoor activities, gymnastics, dance or swimming — letting you start shaping the path you want (e.g., mainstream PE, adapted PE, coaching, or outdoor-activity coaching).

Year 3
In the final year you specialise, gain professional experience, and undertake independent research. You have the opportunity to complete a 100-hour placement (either in a school or professional sports setting), giving you extended hands-on experience supervised by mentors. You also complete an Independent Research Project, which develops your research skills and subject-specific expertise. This year helps you tie together scientific knowledge, coaching/teaching practice, and readiness for graduate-level careers.

Focus areas
Human movement science and health (physical activity, wellbeing), coaching and PE pedagogy, inclusive and adapted physical activity (sport and disability), sport performance analysis, school- and community-based coaching, physical education curriculum design, outdoor and recreational activities, research in sports and coaching, and professional coaching/teaching placements.

Learning outcomes
Graduates will be able to plan and deliver physical education or coaching sessions suitable for different age groups and abilities; understand and apply scientific principles of health, movement, and wellbeing; adapt coaching or PE for inclusion and disability; assess and support athlete or student development; conduct research and reflective practice; and be prepared for roles in sports coaching, PE teaching, sports development, health, and related sectors.

Professional alignment (career readiness)
This degree puts you in a strong position to work as a sports coach, PE teacher (often supplemented with a postgraduate teaching qualification if you want teaching credentials), disability-inclusion coach, youth/sports development officer, personal trainer, or other roles in sports and health. Many graduates also go into performance analysis, strength & conditioning, community sport, fitness management, or further study.

Reputation (employability / quality)
At Worcester, students report high satisfaction: in the National Student Survey 2025, 95 % said they were positive about the teaching on this course. Graduates fare well: 92 % are in work or further study within 15 months of graduating (Graduate Outcomes Survey 2024). The programme’s strong practical placements, sport-industry links, and flexible curriculum help make this a degree with real-world value.

  • Specialise in areas such as disability sport, inclusive coaching, adaptive physical activity, or performance analysis — increasingly valued and opening niche career paths.
