BA Teaching English as a Foreign Language

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Essex

Program Overview

This degree gives you a strong academic grounding in how English works, how people learn it, and how to teach it in real‐world contexts — both in the UK and internationally.  It is well suited to anyone who wants a career in English language teaching (or language‐related fields) and enjoys combining theoretical study with hands‐on teaching practice.

Curriculum structure

Year 1
You begin by exploring modules such as Introduction to TEFL Methodology (where you’ll learn foundational teaching techniques for English as a foreign language) and Introduction to the Study of Language.  You also develop your understanding of how languages work (for example through modules on the structure of English) and begin practical training in TEFL methods.

Year 2
In year 2 you deepen your teaching skills and pedagogic knowledge — for instance through modules on teaching English in diverse contexts, and you may carry out teaching‐practice modules where you plan and deliver lessons. You also further examine linguistics, sociolinguistics, and the social uses of English — helping you understand the learner’s context, not just the language system.

Year 3
In your final year you typically engage in independent research (e.g., a project on language teaching), advanced modules focusing on language pedagogy and perhaps optional modules (including modern languages if you choose). You leave the programme ready for practical teaching roles and with a clear understanding of how to apply theory in classroom and global settings.

Focus areas

Teaching English as a Foreign Language; English language structure and linguistics; teaching methodology; sociolinguistics and language in society; practical teaching experience in English language teaching contexts.

Learning outcomes

Graduates will be able to design, deliver and evaluate English language teaching sessions; apply linguistic and sociolinguistic theory in teaching; understand how English functions in global and multilingual contexts; and adapt teaching methodology to meet the needs of diverse learners.

Professional alignment (accreditation)

The programme does not carry a specific professional teacher‐registration accreditation. However, successful completion gives you a solid degree in TEFL and the practical skills needed for English language teaching roles worldwide.

Reputation (employability rankings)

The Department of Language & Linguistics at Essex is highly rated: the university highlights that it is in the top 200 globally for Linguistics by subject in the QS Quacquarelli Symonds 2024 rankings.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

The University of Essex BA Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) degree, you’re stepping into a programme that not only equips you with solid academic knowledge but also gives you hands-on, real-world teaching experience backed by modern digital tools and labs.

Here’s how you’ll build practical skills and make use of the facilities and opportunities on offer:

  • Early-year modules where you engage in “Introduction to TEFL Methodology” and “Theory & Practice in English Language Teaching”, giving you guided preparation sessions before fully independent lesson planning.
  • A module called “Initial Teaching Practice” (worth 30 credits) where you plan and deliver grammar, vocabulary and skills-development lessons, gradually moving from fully guided to independent teaching.
  • Access to specialist labs for language research and teaching practice: including a Visual World Experimental Lab (eye-tracking, response timing) and a Psycholinguistics Lab, so you can explore how people learn languages and apply this to your teaching.
  • Opportunity for a year abroad or placement year where you live and/or work in another country, immersing yourself in a foreign language context and gaining international teaching or assistant experience.
  • The university library (Albert Sloman Library) and digital learning resources: you’ll use these for research, lesson-planning, collaborating with classmates, and accessing journals and e-resources in linguistics and TEFL.
  • Flexible modern foreign language options alongside your TEFL specialism — you may study languages like French, German, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese or Mandarin, which enhances your global teaching profile and linguistic understanding.

Key additional features of the programme:

  • From Year 1 you begin with theory and TEFL methodology modules; by Year 2 you engage in teaching practice sessions that lead to a TEFL-initiate certificate recognised by the British Council.
  • Practical assessments include lesson planning, micro-teaching, peer and tutor feedback, and independent lessons in year-two onward (as part of your “Initial Teaching Practice” modules).
  • You’ll learn to use language-analysis tools, conduct small scale research (e.g., recording speakers, database work) and engage with digitally-recorded data (via labs) which supports both teaching preparedness and analytic thinking.
  • Because TEFL often involves cross-cultural work, the year abroad or placement helps build adaptability, intercultural communication skills and real teaching contexts — all of which employers value.
  • The programme allows the optional study of another foreign language at no extra cost (through “Languages for All”), helping you build multilingual capacity and broaden your teaching opportunities.

  • The programme gives you a TEFL-initiate qualification recognised by the British Council, alongside your degree — so you graduate with a professional teaching credential as well as an academic qualification.
  • You’ll gain practical teaching experience through modules like “Initial Teaching Practice” and “Language Teaching in Different Contexts” — ensuring you’re not just theoretical but have hands-on skills.
