4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program
Our BEng (Hons) Aerospace Engineering with Industry is a four-year campus-based course which combines rigorous academic study with an industry placement spanning one year. You'll become thoroughly familiar and experienced in the design of aircraft and spacecraft, propulsion, flight dynamics, and control systems—and be equipped for a successful and fulfilling career within the aerospace sector.
Curriculum structure:
Year 1: You’ll build a foundation in aerospace principles, covering mathematics, materials, structural mechanics, thermofluids, and introductory aerospace concepts. This year ensures you’re prepared for advanced topics and hands-on learning in later years.
Year 2: You’ll explore specialised modules such as Aeroengines and Rocket Science, Aircraft Performance and Stability (a group project module), and deepen your understanding of propulsion, flight control, and aircraft systems. You’ll also develop key skills in project management and teamwork through industry-relevant design challenges.
Year 3 (Industry Placement): You'll be on placement in industry for a year, getting hands-on experience, establishing business contacts, and applying what you've learned on the course. The placement is supported by the university work placement officer and careers service, which help you to find and prepare for your placement.
Year 4: You'll return to campus to undertake advanced modules in aerodynamics, structures, and flight dynamics. The third year includes a large individual or group design project, further developing your technical, analytical, and project management skills and preparing you for professional practice.
Focus areas: Aerodynamics, propulsion, structures, flight dynamics, materials, flight control systems, aircraft design, project management, teamwork, industry placement.
Learning outcomes: Mastering the aerospace engineering fundamentals, design and analysis by hand, high-level problem-solving, professional and team skills, and aerospace and related industries employment readiness.
Professional alignment (accreditation): Accredited by The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) on behalf of the Engineering Council to satisfy the Incorporated Engineer registration requirement and contribute partially to the academic requirement for Chartered Engineer status.
Reputation (employability rankings): 90% of BEng (Hons) Aerospace Engineering graduates are in work and/or study 15 months after graduation (Graduate Outcomes Survey 2019-20 & 2020-21). 4th in the UK for Student Satisfaction in Aeronautical & Aerospace Engineering (Complete University Guide 2025). 100% of students agreed that teaching staff supported their learning (National Student Survey 2024).
Teesside University's Middlesbrough campus offers a high-tech, digitally enabled setting with recent investment of £270 million and a further £300 million in progress, which ensures students are exposed to the latest technology and learning equipment. Aerospace engineering students are facilitated by specially constructed engineering laboratories for aerospace, including state-of-the-art pilot plants and a nanotechnology clean room. The BIOS Building provides high-quality science labs, while the upcoming £40 million Digital Life Building will deliver industry-standard digital studios for collaborative projects. The campus library, upgraded with a £7 million investment, offers over 500 PCs, advanced study spaces, and a wide array of digital and print resources. Here’s how you’ll gain hands-on experience:
Engineering labs for aerospace, power, electrical, civil, and telecommunications engineering
State-of-the-art science labs in anatomy, chemistry, microbiology, Earth sciences, and food sciences
Pilot plants and nanotechnology clean room to facilitate advanced research and simulation
The Digital Life Building (opening 2025) for industry-standard digital studio experiences
State-of-the-art library with innovative study spaces and rich learning resources
The Student Life building that integrates student services and offers collaborative study spaces
Creative arts studios and new sound stage for interdisciplinary works
All facilities located on a single-campus site for easy access and collaboration
