MEng Hons Aerospace Engineering

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Teesside University

Program Overview

The MEng (Hons) Aerospace Engineering at Teesside University is a four-year, on-campus integrated master’s program for students passionate about flight, aircraft, and space technology. You’ll study advanced topics in design, fluids, mechanics, flight control systems, structures, propulsion, flight dynamics, and aircraft performance, preparing for leadership roles in the aerospace sector.

Curriculum structure:

  • Year 1: You’ll build a foundation in engineering with core modules covering mathematics, materials, structural mechanics, thermofluids, and introductory aerospace principles. This year ensures you’re equipped to tackle advanced aerospace topics in later years.

  • Year 2: You’ll dive deeper into aerospace engineering with modules in aeroengines and rocket science, aircraft performance and stability, flight control systems, and group projects. You’ll also develop skills in electronics, computing, and project management, applying your knowledge to real-world aerospace challenges.

  • Year 3: This year focuses on advanced structural design, materials science, and computer-based structural analysis using industry-standard software. You’ll study flight dynamics, control, and aerodynamics, and undertake an individual or small group research project, developing independent learning and technical expertise.

  • Year 4: You will be undertaking an Advanced Engineering Group Project as part of a project team to design a solution for a significant engineering design issue from inception through testing. Advanced modules include advanced aerodynamics (hypsersonic flow and experimental methods), leadership and professional practice to position you as a Chartered Engineer and for leadership in the industry.

Topic focus areas: Aerodynamics, propulsion, structures, flight dynamics, materials, flight control systems, design engineering, hypersonic flow, project management, leadership.

Learning outcomes: Advanced aerospace engineering mastery, hands-on experience with industry software, leadership and teamwork, problem-solving, readiness for chartered status and advanced industry careers.

Professional alignment (accreditation): Accredited by The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) on behalf of the Engineering Council, meeting the academic requirement for Chartered Engineer (CEng) registration.

Reputation (employability rankings): Median salaries after graduation from alumni are £27k (after 1 year), £30k (after 3 years), and £31k (after 5 years); industry placement and employability have at least six participating organisations as their graduate recruitment ground.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

Teesside University offers a truly immersive and practical learning environment, thanks to a recent £270 million investment in its campus and facilities, with an additional £300 million planned for future upgrades. As an aerospace engineering student, you’ll benefit from purpose-built engineering laboratories designed specifically for aerospace, featuring cutting-edge equipment and digital tools. The BIOS Building houses high-quality science labs, while the soon-to-open Digital Life Building will provide industry-quality digital studio experiences. You’ll also have access to a library with over 500 PCs, advanced study spaces, and an extensive collection of digital and print resources. Here’s how you’ll gain hands-on experience:

  • Engineering labs equipped for aerospace, including pilot plants and a nanotechnology clean room

  • High-quality science labs for research and education

  • Access to over 500 PCs and advanced digital learning resources in the £7m library

  • Purpose-built study spaces and collaborative environments in the Student Life building

  • Industry-quality digital studios (Digital Life Building, opening 2025)

  • Opportunities for group projects, internships, and shadowing through university-industry links

  • All facilities are located on a single-site campus for easy access and collaboration

  • Modern creative arts and media studios for interdisciplinary projects

Progression & Future Opportunities

The MEng (Hons) Aerospace Engineering graduates at Teesside University are highly employable, securing roles in aerospace, space, defence, automotive, oil and gas, electronics, and renewable energy sectors. The Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS) accredited the program, supporting your journey to Incorporated or Chartered Engineer status.

You’ll benefit from:

  • Professional accreditation: Accredited degree supporting your path to professional registration (RAeS, Engineering Council)

  • Industry partnerships: Strong industry partnerships with employers such as Airbus, BAE Systems, Rolls-Royce, GE Aviation, Qinetiq, Cobham, Jacobs Engineering Group, EDF Energy, Cummins, Labman, and Caterpillar — graduates have secured work and placements with these companies

  • Practical experience: Hands-on experience in advanced facilities: access to flight simulators, wind tunnels, structural and materials labs, and a hangar with fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft and engines at Hartlepool College

  • Applied learning: Real-world learning through group design projects, technical reports, presentations, and use of industry-standard software like NASA’s GMAT

  • Career support: Dedicated career support, networking events, and placement opportunities, including an optional work placement year for industry experience

  • Global mobility: International opportunities, including study visits and mobility programmes in countries such as China, Spain, the Czech Republic, and Malaysia

Graduate outcomes: 90% of graduates are in work or further study 15 months after graduation; median salary is £29,500 fifteen months after graduation, rising to £30,000 after three years and £35,000 after five years

Further Academic Progression: Students can pursue postgraduate study such as MSc Aerospace Engineering, Space Systems Engineering, or Astronautics at Teesside or other top universities. The program’s strong technical and industry foundation also opens doors to fields like AI & Data Science, Management, and Technical Development.
