4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program
The BSc (Hons) Aircraft Maintenance Engineering and Management at UHI Millennium Institute is the only degree of its kind in Scotland. Delivered in partnership with Air Service Training (Eng) Ltd (AST), the program meets EASA and UKCAA Category B1.1 licence requirements. Students combine academic and practical learning with management training, gaining an honours degree and a Part-66 Certificate of Recognition, helping fast-track licensing and career progression.
Curriculum structure
Year 1: You’ll gain foundational knowledge in electrical and electronic systems, aviation materials, engineering math, and aircraft maintenance. This year emphasises hands-on skills with a strong practical focus simulating real-world tasks.
Year 2: You'll move into gas turbine engines, aircraft systems diagnostics, aerodynamics, and airframe structures. You'll develop applied maintenance and repair skills with continued practical training across aircraft types.
Year 3: This year covers maintenance management, avionics systems, reliability, and airworthiness. You'll complete a group project and select options in either professional practice or airworthiness. An optional 6-week professional training package is offered to accelerate B licence eligibility.
Year 4: You’ll focus on aircraft performance, airline operations, quality assurance, and sustainable aviation. A major individual engineering project, with emphasis on leadership and management, completes the program.
Specialist fields: Aircraft maintenance, propulsion systems, avionics, aerodynamics, structures, airworthiness, reliability, quality management, sustainable aviation, crisis management.
Learning outcomes: Technical competence in aircraft maintenance and systems management, applied problem-solving, engineering leadership, project coordination, and preparedness for EASA/UKCAA licensing.
Professional alignment (accreditation): Accredited by the Royal Aeronautical Society (IEng); Part-66 training aligned with UKCAA and EASA standards.
Reputation (employability rankings): The only program of its kind in Scotland; delivered with AST (90+ years aviation training); strong links to aviation employers across the UK and globally.
Students benefit from UHI Perth’s aviation training hub, where classroom theory meets professional practice across high-tech facilities:
Dunne Aeronautical Laboratory houses cutting-edge tools for propulsion, flight testing, and aerodynamics.
A large flight simulator to develop procedural awareness and operational control.
Aircraft maintenance hangar at Perth Airport, mimicking commercial working environments.
Gas turbine rig and wind tunnel for propulsion and aerodynamic diagnostics.
Specialist engineering labs and design suites with simulation software (e.g. CAD, FEA, diagnostics tools).
Option of professional training (6-week package) to support licensing eligibility and skill refinement.
Graduates of the BSc (Hons) Aircraft Maintenance Engineering and Management at UHI Millennium Institute are highly employable, moving into roles such as aircraft maintenance engineer, aerospace systems engineer, avionics and mission systems engineer, aviation safety engineer, aircraft propulsion engineer, technical services management engineer, and continuing airworthiness or compliance management engineer. The program is unique in Scotland and meets the syllabus requirements for the EASA and UKCAA Category B1.1 aircraft maintenance licence (EASA Part-66), delivered in partnership with Air Service Training (AST), the world’s longest-established aviation maintenance training provider.
You’ll benefit from:
Dual qualification pathway: In addition to your honours degree, you can obtain an Approved EASA and/or UKCAA Part 66 Certificate of Recognition, allowing you to fast-track the experience required for a Category B1.1 aircraft maintenance licence and become a licensed certifying engineer
Industry-focused training: The course is taught by staff with extensive military and civilian experience and includes significant hands-on work in hangar spaces that simulate an active commercial EASA/UKCAA Part 145 maintenance environment at UHI Perth
Management and leadership development: Years three and four provide insight into management roles within aircraft maintenance, airline operations, quality management, sustainable aviation, and crisis management, preparing you for leadership positions in the aviation sector
Professional recognition: The degree is IEng accredited with the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS), supporting your journey to Incorporated Engineer status and enhancing your professional profile
Strong industry links: Benefit from close connections with aviation companies in Scotland, the UK, and worldwide, plus access to AST’s RAeS Corporate membership and a global alumni network
Optional professional training: A 6-week professional training package in year three or after graduation can further accelerate your path to licence certification
Graduate outcomes: With the B1.1 licence and degree, graduates secure roles with airlines, MROs, and aviation authorities globally. The skills developed are also transferable to sectors like oil and gas, renewables, and nuclear. Typical starting salaries for licensed aircraft engineers in the UK range from £28,000–£35,000, rising to £45,000–£60,000+ with experience and management responsibility.
Further Academic Progression: You can progress to postgraduate study in areas such as MSc Aircraft Maintenance Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or Aviation Management. The program’s technical and leadership focus also opens doors to advanced roles in safety, compliance, and technical development within and beyond aviation.
