BEng Hons Aerospace Engineering

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Queen Mary University of London

Program Overview

Queen Mary University of London's BEng (Hons) Aerospace Engineering is a three-year, on-campus undergraduate program for students interested in space, aviation, and advanced technology. The course combines sound scientific principles with hands-on experience in aerodynamics, propulsion, structures, and systems, preparing graduates to work at the forefront of aerospace innovation.

Curriculum structure:

  • Year 1: Build a strong foundation in engineering design, experimental practice, and mathematical modelling. Core modules include Materials Engineering, Fluid Mechanics & Thermodynamics, and Professional Skills for Engineers. Early exposure to lab work and simulation prepares you for advanced topics.

  • Year 2: Deepen your understanding through modules such as Applied Solid Mechanics, Aerothermodynamics of Flows, and Introduction to Spacecraft Dynamics. You’ll also study Instrumentation and Measurements, Control System Analysis, Subsonic Aerodynamics, and Sustainable Manufacturing.

  • Year 3: Specialise with advanced modules like Simulation Tools in Engineering Analysis, Conceptual Design of Aircraft, and Flight Dynamics & Stability. The Integrated Design Project simulates real-world engineering scenarios. Electives include Aircraft Structures, Spacecraft Design, Propulsion Systems, and High-Speed Aerodynamics.

Focus areas: Aerodynamics, Propulsion, Aircraft and Spacecraft Design, Flight Dynamics, Aerospace Structures, Systems Engineering

Learning outcomes: Master core scientific and engineering principles, solve complex problems, gain experimental and simulation experience (MATLAB, Python), manage multidisciplinary projects, and communicate technical ideas effectively

Professional alignment (accreditation): Accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) and Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS); meets IEng standards and partially fulfils CEng requirements

Reputation (employability rankings): Ranked #15 in Aeronautical & Aerospace Engineering (Complete University Guide 2025); recognised leader in UK engineering education

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

You’ll gain practical skills in Queen Mary’s advanced aero lab, featuring a state-of-the-art flight simulator, mechanical testing facilities, and teaching laboratories. The Whitehead Aeronautical Laboratory contains both low- and high-speed wind tunnels, and you’ll have access to an acoustics research rig and a purpose-built, fully equipped teaching workshop. You'll have access to:

  • State-of-the-art flight simulator with a moving-base platform and virtual vision

  • Mechanical testing facilities for materials and structures

  • Teaching laboratories for hands-on experiments

  • Whitehead Aeronautical Laboratory with low- and high-speed wind tunnels for aerodynamic testing and research

  • Acoustics research rig for noise and vibration studies

  • Fully equipped teaching workshop for prototyping and manufacturing

  • Access to computational modelling facilities (ABAQUS for structures, FLUENT for aerodynamics) and high-performance computing clusters

  • Individual lab-based research project in final year

  • Industry networking at the Industrial Liaison Forum

  • Guest lectures from leading aerospace companies
