BEng Hons Aerospace Engineering with Year Abroad

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Queen Mary University of London

Program Overview

The BEng (Hons) Aerospace Engineering with Year Abroad at Queen Mary University of London is a four-year, on-campus degree that combines rigorous aerospace engineering training with a global study experience. You’ll gain advanced knowledge in aerodynamics, propulsion, structures, and systems, while spending a year at an international partner university to broaden your perspective and enhance your employability.

Curriculum structure:

  • Year 1: You will begin with fundamental modules in Mathematics, Solid Mechanics, Fluid Mechanics, and foundation Aerospace Engineering. Initial laboratory sessions and design projects develop your technical expertise and problem-solving abilities.

  • Year 2: You will continue to advance your knowledge with modules like Applied Solid Mechanics, Instrumentation and Measurements, Aerothermodynamics of Flows, and Analysis and Design of Control Systems. The course incorporates modules on sustainable manufacturing and data science in engineering.

  • Year 3 (Year Abroad): You will be learning at a European, North American, Asian, or Australian partner institution (depending on partnerships), taking approved modules to Queen Mary standards. This experiential year exposes you to various teaching styles, cultures, and international engineering practices.

  • Year 4: Returning to London, you’ll focus on advanced topics in aerospace engineering, including group design projects, flight dynamics, and elective modules tailored to your interests. You’ll also complete a major individual project, often linked to current research or industry challenges.

Focus areas: Aerodynamics, propulsion, aircraft and spacecraft design, flight dynamics, aerospace structures, systems engineering, international experience.

Learning outcomes: Technical competence, global engineering perspective, creative problem-solving, teamwork, project management, and simulation and computer tools skills (e.g., MATLAB).

Professional relevance (accreditation): Accredited by Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS) and Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE); meets educational requirements for registration as Incorporated Engineer (IEng) and half as Chartered Engineer (CEng).

Image (employability ratings): Queen Mary is a top UK performer in engineering, with a long history in aerospace and strong graduate employability

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

You’ll gain practical skills in Queen Mary’s advanced aero lab, featuring a state-of-the-art flight simulator, mechanical testing facilities, and teaching laboratories. The Whitehead Aeronautical Laboratory contains both low- and high-speed wind tunnels, an acoustics research rig, and a fully equipped teaching workshop. The year abroad offers exposure to new facilities, teaching methods, and international research environments. You'll have access to:

  • State-of-the-art flight simulator with moving-base platform and virtual vision

  • Mechanical testing laboratory facilities for structure and material

  • Hands-on experiment teaching facility laboratories

  • Low- and high-speed wind tunnel facilities in Whitehead Aeronautical Laboratory
