5 Years On Campus Bachelors Program
The MEng (Hons) Aerospace Engineering with Year Abroad at Queen Mary University of London is a five-year integrated master's course on campus. It's ideal for students who want to combine high-quality aerospace engineering training with an international flavour, gaining technical expertise and foreign experience by spending a year abroad at one of our partner universities.
Curriculum structure:
Year 1: You’ll establish a solid foundation in engineering, covering core modules such as Fluid Mechanics, Materials Engineering, Mathematical Modelling, and the Explore Aerospace Engineering module. Practical workshops and labs develop your hands-on skills from the start.
Year 2: The second year deepens your knowledge with modules in Aerodynamics, Thermodynamics, Flight Mechanics, Structures, and Control Systems. You’ll also work on design and experimental practice, preparing for advanced study and group projects.
Year 3 (Year Abroad): You spend a whole year at one of our partner international universities, completing approved modules to Queen Mary standards. This is your chance to experience other ways of teaching, broaden your understanding of cultures, and develop an international engineering attitude.
Year 4: At Queen Mary, you will study advanced topics including Simulation Tools in Engineering Analysis, Conceptual Aircraft Design, Flight Dynamics & Stability, and undertake a substantial group design task. You may specialise in topics like Spacecraft Design and Propulsion Systems via electives.
Year 5: Your final year is spent on an important Industry/Research Project and specialist modules like Computational Engineering, Engineering Design Optimisation, Machine Learning and AI for Engineering, Advanced Flight Control, and Aeroelasticity. You'll also have the option to select from Modern Robotics and Spacecraft Systems Engineering, positioning you for leadership in the industry.
Focus areas: Aerodynamics, propulsion, aircraft and spacecraft design, flight dynamics, aerospace structures, systems engineering, sustainability, computational engineering, international experience.
Learning outcomes: High-level technical and analytical skills, global engineering perspective, research and project management, teamwork, professional communication, proficiency in simulation and digital technologies (e.g., MATLAB, Python).
Professional alignment (accreditation): Fully accredited by the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS) and the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), meeting all academic requirements for Chartered Engineer (CEng) registration.
Reputation (employability rankings): Queen Mary is a top UK performer in terms of engineering teaching, with a long history in aerospace and high graduate employability; the course is highly respected by employers and professional bodies.
You’ll gain practical skills in Queen Mary’s advanced aero lab, featuring a state-of-the-art flight simulator, mechanical testing facilities, and teaching laboratories. The Whitehead Aeronautical Laboratory contains both low- and high-speed wind tunnels, an acoustics research rig, and a fully equipped teaching workshop. The year abroad offers exposure to new facilities, teaching methods, and international research environments. You'll have access to:
State-of-the-art flight simulator with moving-base platform and virtual vision
Mechanical testing laboratory facilities for structure and material
Hands-on experiment teaching facility laboratories
Low- and high-speed wind tunnel facilities in Whitehead Aeronautical Laboratory
Acoustics research rig available for noise and vibration experiments
Teaching workshop with full resources for prototyping and manufacturing
Individual lab-based final year research project
Industry networking in the Industrial Liaison Forum
Guest lectures of leading aerospace organisations
Access to world-class international research in the School of Engineering and Materials Science
Year spent in a partner university in Europe, North America, Asia, or Australia
