BEng Hons Aerospace Engineering

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Swansea University

Program Overview

The Swansea University BEng (Hons) Aerospace Engineering is a three-year, campus-based degree offering specialist training in the theory and operation of aeronautical vehicles, from jet- and propeller-driven aircraft to gliders and helicopters. You'll study the entire engineering process—from concept and design to test and flight—building analytical skill and hands-on experience with state-of-the-art equipment, preparing you for innovation and leadership in the aerospace sector.

Curriculum structure:

  • Year 1: You will learn Design and Laboratory Classes, Introduction to Aerospace Engineering, Applied Mechanics (Aero), and Thermofluids (Mechanical & General). The year has practical lab sessions, core engineering concepts, and the chance for a flying experience on the Merlin MPX521 Engineering Flight Simulator and JetCat P120 Engine.

  • Year 2: You’ll advance to modules in Aerospace Structures, AI and Aerospace Systems, Flight Mechanics, Experimental Studies (Aerospace), and Computer Aided Engineering (Aerospace). Team-based projects and laboratory sessions deepen your technical and analytical skills, with continued access to advanced wind tunnels and simulation equipment.

  • Year 3: You’ll focus on Engineering Management (Aero, EEE, Mech), Rotorcraft Theory, Gas Dynamics, Propulsion, and complete an Individual Engineering Project. You’ll also participate in a flight test course, gaining real-world experience in aircraft performance and data analysis, and further develop your research and project management skills.

Focus areas: Aerodynamics, propulsion, structures, flight mechanics, aerospace systems, computational modelling.

Learning outcomes: Engineering design, analytical problem-solving, teamwork, project management, research skills, effective communication.

Professional alignment (accreditation): Accredited by Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS), and Institution of Engineering Designers (IED); supports Chartered Engineer (CEng) registration.

Reputation (employability rankings): Ranking #17 in the UK for Aeronautical and Aerospace Engineering (Complete University Guide 2025); average graduate salary £25,000–£31,000 fifteen months following graduation; student satisfaction rate of 85%.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

You’ll gain practical skills in Swansea’s advanced aerospace facilities, including the Merlin MPX521 Engineering Flight Simulator, JetCat P120 Engine, and multiple wind tunnels. The course features hands-on laboratory classes, flight test courses, and the opportunity for a flying lesson in your first year. You’ll work with cutting-edge simulation and testing equipment, participate in design-build-test projects, and benefit from strong industry links for placements and guest lectures. You will have access to:

  • Merlin MPX521 Flight Simulator for Engineering

  • JetCat P120 Engine for propulsion research

  • Multiple wind tunnels for aerodynamic testing

  • Practical classes in design and laboratory with real-world applications

  • Flight test course in the third year

  • Practical experience using advanced computational and modelling software

  • Flying lesson opportunity in Year 1

  • Industry guest lectures and placement support
