4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program
The BEng (Hons) Aerospace Engineering with Foundation Year at Swansea University is a four-year, on-campus program designed for students who need further preparation in maths and science before beginning degree-level study. The foundation year offers a multidisciplinary introduction to core engineering subjects, enabling smooth transition into the BEng. You’ll then explore the full aerospace engineering cycle — from concept and design to testing and flight — building analytical and practical skills.
Curriculum structure:
Foundation Year: Modules include Development of Key Skills for Engineers, Introduction to Materials, Basic Engineering Analysis, Chemistry Fundamentals, Engineering Science, Electricity and Magnetism, Mechanics, and Thermofluid Mechanics.
Year 1: You’ll study Design and Laboratory Classes, Introduction to Aerospace Engineering, Applied Mechanics (Aero), and Thermofluids. Includes hands-on lab work and simulator experience with the Merlin MPX521 and JetCat P120 engine.
Year 2: Covers Aerospace Structures, AI and Aerospace Systems, Flight Mechanics, Experimental Studies, and Computer Aided Engineering. Technical and analytical skills are deepened through lab sessions and team projects.
Year 3: Focus on Engineering Management, Rotorcraft Theory, Gas Dynamics, Propulsion, and an Individual Engineering Project. Includes a flight test course with aircraft performance and data analysis.
Focus areas: Aerodynamics, propulsion, structures, flight mechanics, aerospace systems, computational modelling.
Learning outcomes: Engineering design, problem-solving, teamwork, project management, research, and communication skills.
Professional alignment: Accredited by RAeS, IMechE, and IED; supports CEng registration.
Reputation: Ranked #17 in the UK (Complete University Guide 2025); 85% student satisfaction; graduates work at Rolls-Royce, Airbus, and BAE Systems.
You’ll gain practical skills using Swansea’s state-of-the-art facilities, including the Merlin MPX521 Flight Simulator, JetCat P120 Engine, and a custom-built £1.2 million wind tunnel. The program features flying lessons, flight test courses, and hands-on lab work. Here’s how you’ll build experience:
Merlin MPX521 and MP500-2 flight simulators
18-metre wind tunnel for aerodynamic testing
JetCat P120 engine and aerodynamic modelling software
Flight test course in a Jetstream twin turboprop aircraft
Flying instruction opportunity at a local airport
Design-build-test projects and experimental lab classes
Guest lectures and careers support
