MEng Hons Aerospace Engineering

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Swansea University

Program Overview

The MEng (Hons) Aerospace Engineering at Swansea University is a four-year, on-campus degree providing expert training in the theory and operation of aeronautical vehicles—from jet-powered and propeller-driven planes to gliders and helicopters. You’ll study the full engineering journey, from concept to flight, and can specialise in streams such as Space, Structural/Computational, or Materials/Propulsion, gaining hands-on experience with state-of-the-art equipment and real-world projects.

Curriculum structure:

  • Year 1: You'll develop a base in dynamic systems, engineering analysis, engineering design, engineering mechanics, fluid mechanics, strength of materials, and thermodynamics. Lab and design courses introduce you to basic aerospace engineering concepts and collaboration.

  • Year 2: You'll transition to modules in aerodynamics, aerospace systems, airframe structures, computer-aided engineering, control systems, dynamics, flight mechanics, and structural mechanics. Experimental studies and group projects further develop your analytical and digital skills.

  • Year 3: You’ll study gas dynamics, high-performance materials and selection, propulsion, engineering management, rotorcraft theory, and undertake an individual engineering project. You’ll also cover a flight test course in aircraft performance, stability, and control, with practical flying experience.

  • Year 4: Specialist modules include advanced airframe structure, advanced aerodynamics, entrepreneurship for engineers, flight dynamics and control, fluid-structure interaction, numerical methods for partial differential equations, advanced propulsion, and spacecraft structure design. You’ll complete a major group design project and can focus on your chosen stream.

Focus areas: Aerodynamics, propulsion, structures, flight dynamics, spacecraft systems, computational methods, materials science.

Learning outcomes: Advanced problem-solving, engineering design, teamwork, research skills, project management, digital engineering, effective communication.

Professional alignment (accreditation): Accredited by Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS), Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), and Institution of Engineering Designers (IED); meets requirements for Chartered Engineer (CEng) registration.

Reputation (employability rankings): Top 100 in the world for Aerospace Engineering (QS World University Rankings 2024); graduates work at Rolls-Royce, GE Aviation, Airbus, Babcock, Jaguar Land Rover, and more.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

You’ll gain hands-on experience in Swansea’s cutting-edge aerospace facilities, including the Merlin MPX521 flight simulator, JetCat P120 engine, a custom-built 18-metre wind tunnel, and advanced aerodynamic modelling software. You’ll take part in a flight test course in a Jetstream twin turboprop aircraft and can access flying lessons at the local airport. Computer-aided design, simulation, and experimental labs support your learning throughout. You will have access to:

  • Merlin MPX521 and MP500-2 flight simulators

  • £1.2 million 18-metre wind tunnel

  • JetCat P120 engine and world-class aerodynamics modelling software

  • Flight test course in Jetstream aircraft

  • Practical flying instruction at a local airport

  • Computer-aided design (CAD) and simulation labs

  • Group and individual design projects

  • Access to industry guest lectures and research seminars

Progression & Future Opportunities

Graduates of Swansea's MEng Aerospace Engineering are highly employable, with 89% employed or in further study 15 months after graduating and a median salary of £31,000. This course prepares you for working in leadership roles in aerospace and related industries, including Aerospace Engineer, Design Engineer, and Project Manager.

You'll benefit from:

  • Professional accreditation: Accredited degree to support your progression to Chartered Engineer (CEng) registration

  • Industry engagement: Excellent industry links and placement opportunities

  • Practical experience: Flight training and hands-on experience with advanced equipment

  • Reputation and employability: Robust standing of the University and top graduate employability rankings
