BEng/MEng Aerospace Engineering with a Foundation Year

5 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

The University of Sheffield

Program Overview

The University of Sheffield offers a five-year BEng/MEng Aerospace Engineering with a Foundation Year for students who need to prepare further in mathematics and science before starting degree-level study. The foundation year builds your skills base, and then you progress directly to the full aerospace engineering degree, gaining theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience in research, design, development, construction, and aircraft flight.

Curriculum structure:

  • Foundation Year: You'll learn core modules in Introduction to Engineering, Further Foundation Mathematics, and Foundations of Physics. The year is an extension of your understanding of core scientific and mathematical principles, an introduction to engineering practice, and preparation for the demands of the full degree.

  • Year 1: You'll study propulsion, instrumentation, aerodynamics, and control of aircraft. Project-based learning is central: you'll design, construct, and test drones and quad planes, and participate in the Global Engineering Challenge, utilising teams to solve real-world issues.

  • Year 2: You'll further develop your knowledge through specialist modules in aerodynamics, aircraft structure, and flight mechanics. Open-ended design and build projects, alongside optional modules, allow you to specialise in areas of your choice and develop skills in teamwork and project management.

  • Year 3: You'll be studying avionic systems or aeromechanics in depth, and conducting an investigative research project under the guidance of academics. This year includes advanced laboratory work, project management, and professional communication.

  • Year 4 (MEng only): You'll be exploring specialist themes like space systems, advanced materials, or computational aerodynamics. The year involves an extended research project and advanced group design work, taking you to professional practice or further study.

Focus areas: Propulsion, aerodynamics, avionics, aircraft control, systems integration, project management.

Learning outcomes: Engineering design, complex problem-solving, research skills, teamwork, project management, effective communication.

Professional alignment (accreditation): Accredited by Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS), Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Institution of Engineering and Technology, and Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining; meets academic requirements for Chartered Engineer (CEng) status.

Reputation (employability rankings): Top 5 in the UK for aeronautical and manufacturing engineering (The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2024); best student experience in the National Student Survey 2024.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

Using industry-standard equipment, you’ll learn in The Diamond, one of the UK’s best engineering teaching spaces. The course features project-based modules, hands-on laboratory sessions, and opportunities to design, build, and fly aircraft. Facilities include static and X-Plane flight simulators, a netted drone flight area, and a jet engine test bench. You’ll also have the chance to compete nationally and internationally, and work with leading aerospace companies through project work and placements. You'll have access to:

  • The Diamond and specialist engineering laboratories

  • Four Merlin static flight simulators and six X-Plane flight simulators

  • Netted drone flying area and jet engine test stand

  • Project work and group design projects

  • National and international competitions

  • Industry links with Airbus UK, BAE Systems, Boeing, Rolls-Royce

  • Personal tutor and small group academic support

  • Placement and study abroad opportunities
