The MEng Aerospace Engineering at the University of Sheffield is a four-year integrated master’s program designed for students seeking advanced knowledge and hands-on experience in aeronautical and aerospace engineering. You’ll study propulsion, instrumentation, aerodynamics, and aircraft control, with opportunities for flight training and project management experience.
Curriculum structure:
Year 1: You’ll build a strong foundation in propulsion, instrumentation, aerodynamics, and aircraft control. Core modules include Engineering Statics and Dynamics, Aerospace Aerodynamics and Thermodynamics, and introductory courses in mathematics and engineering science. Project-based learning is central: you’ll design, build, and fly air systems such as drones and quad planes, and participate in the Global Engineering Challenge, working in teams to solve real-world engineering problems.|
Year 2: You'll build your learning with the latest advanced modules in aerodynamics, aircraft structure, and flight mechanics. Your course includes open-ended design and making projects for you to use and get accustomed to the state-of-the-art equipment. You'll also get to start streamlining your degree by selecting elective modules that particularly fascinate you most, and continue learning team and project work.
Year 3: You'll specialise in a stream (avionic systems or aeromechanics) and complete an investigative research project under the guidance of a top scholar. Advanced modules allow you to pursue your chosen topic in depth, and you'll also develop practical and project management abilities.
Year 4: You'll learn your selected route in greater detail, with specialist modules in areas such as space systems, space weather, materials, and manufacturing. The year includes an extended research project and advanced group design work, taking you to professional practice or further study. You'll also gain additional project management skills and practical skills in high demand by employers.
Focus areas: Propulsion, Aerodynamics, Avionic Systems, Aeromechanics, Aircraft Control, Space Systems, Materials and Manufacturing
Learning outcomes: Apply advanced engineering principles to aerospace challenges, design, build, and fly complex air systems, manage interdisciplinary projects from start to finish, communicate technical concepts across engineering disciplines
Professional alignment (accreditation): Aerospace Engineering MEng (Hons) — completely accredited by the Royal Aeronautical Society and meets all academic conditions for Chartered Engineer (CEng) status.
Reputation (employability league tables): One of the top 5 in the UK for aeronautical and manufacturing engineering (Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2024); top Russell Group university in National Student Survey 2023. Median salary: £31,000 after 15 months.
You will gain hands-on experience through project-based learning, hand-flight training, and use of cutting-edge facilities like The Diamond. The program emphasizes "learning by doing," with excellent industry connections and exposure to experience.
