University of Leicester MEng Aerospace Engineering is a four-year, campus-based program that delivers a general engineering foundation before proceeding to specialist aerospace modules. The program is meant for future innovators who wish to solve the problems of contemporary aerospace and gain Chartered Engineer (CEng) status. You'll have the advantage of industry-led teaching, flight test practice modules, and leadership-oriented project work, which will set you up for a high-impact career in aviation and beyond.
Curriculum structure:
Year 1: You'll establish a strong grounding in engineering mathematics, programming, solid mechanics, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics and heat transfer, digital electronics and communications, and electrical engineering principles. There is a sustainable engineering design project during the year, and all of the modules are common to engineering courses at Leicester.
Year 2: You will begin to specialise in aerospace engineering through modules such as Integrated Engineering Design, Engineering Management and Business Simulation, System Dynamics and Control, Materials and Structures, Fluid Dynamics and Aerodynamics, Dynamics and Vibrations, Aircraft Performance and Navigation, and Aircraft Systems and Propulsion. You will learn through interdisciplinary groups and gain vital project management skills.
Year 3: You will build your expertise with higher-level modules in flight dynamics, aircraft navigation, aero-engine design, aerospace materials, and aircraft performance. Specialist contributions are provided by guest lecturers from industry. You will have the opportunity to go on a practical flight test course or flight simulator, and you will work on a large group project with a leadership and technical innovation focus.
Year 4: The fourth year comprises industrially-relevant project work, high-level technical content, and leadership at its center. You will be engaged in a group or individual research project, learning advanced aerospace subjects, and continuing to build your skills in business finance, project management, intellectual property, health and safety, marketing, and ethics. The year has been structured to provide the educational basis for Chartered Engineer (CEng) status.
Focus areas: Flight dynamics, aero-engine design, navigation of aircraft, aerospace materials, aircraft performance, engineering management, leadership.
Learning outcomes: Complex problem-solving, engineering design, teamwork, project management, research skills, effective communication, leadership.
Professional alignment (accreditation): Accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) and the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS); fully meets the academic requirements for Chartered Engineer (CEng) status.
Reputation (employability rankings): Ranked 16th in the UK for Aerospace Engineering (Complete University Guide 2025); close industry connections and small teaching groups.
The University of Leicester's MEng Aerospace Engineering programme gives you access to world-leading facilities that support your academic and practical development. You will have the opportunity to utilise specialist laboratories, advanced equipment, and digital tools that are geared for 'hands-on' learning and cutting-edge research in aerospace engineering. You will have access to:
Student Workshop: With standard manufacturing equipment (drills, lathes, milling machines) and rapid prototyping devices, including a laser cutter and 3D printers, you can develop hands-on engineering skills and practice project builds.
Charles Wilson Wind Tunnel: A closed-loop wind tunnel for aerodynamics testing and environmental fluid mechanics. You will be using it in your third year for projects such as morphing wings and aerodynamic analysis.
Advanced Microscopy Facility: Staffed with modern electron microscopes for material and surface analysis on the nanometre scale, to support research and coursework in aerospace materials.
Mechanics of Materials Laboratory: Dedicated to the study of the mechanical behaviour of aerospace materials, including fatigue and high-temperature performance.
Digital TWIN Laboratory: Enables digital modelling, simulation, and testing of aerospace parts and systems.
Flight Test Course and Flight Simulator: Take part in attending a hands-on flight test course or utilising a flight simulator in order to extend your knowledge in flight dynamics as well as vehicle performance.
Formula Student Workshop: Engage in designing, developing, and testing a racing car for the year-round Formula Student competition, earning experience in teamwork and project management.
EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Innovative Metal Processing: Access to cutting-edge research and training in innovative aerospace materials and manufacturing techniques.
Open Door Policy & Small Teaching Groups: Inclusive support and small classes are offered by the School of Engineering, ensuring individual guidance and mentoring.
