BEng Hons Aerospace Engineering

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Liverpool

Program Overview

The University of Liverpool BEng (Hons) Aerospace Engineering is a three-year, on-campus undergraduate degree for students who are passionate about aircraft, spacecraft, and cutting-edge engineering. You'll study core topics such as aerodynamics, aero structures, flight dynamics and control, propulsion systems, avionics, and aircraft materials that will equip you for a wide range of aerospace careers.

Curriculum structure:

  • Year 1: You'll form a strong foundation in engineering mathematics and computing, solids & structures, and materials processing and selection. Early exposure to practical experience includes laboratory sessions (lab coat required) and a week-long ProEngineer (ProE) software module, so you gain important technical and digital competencies.

  • Year 2: This year deepens your understanding with modules like aerospace engineering design, aircraft performance, and experimental methods. You’ll participate in a two-day flight test course in a Jetstream aircraft, applying classroom knowledge to real-world scenarios. Safety boots are required for specific practical activities.

  • Year 3: You'll learn advanced topics such as aeroengines, avionics and communications systems, project management, and dynamic systems. The crowning glory is an individual research project, where you can innovate and specialize in your area of interest, with the help of access to state-of-the-art laboratories and digital resources.

Focus areas: Aerodynamics, aero structures, flight dynamics and control, propulsion systems, avionics, aircraft materials, aircraft design.

Learning outcomes: Design, analyse and test aerospace systems; apply advanced engineering mathematics; use industry-standard software and laboratory equipment; carry out independent research; communicate technical ideas effectively.

Professional alignment (accreditation): Double-accredited by the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS) and the Institute of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), meeting academic requirements for Incorporated and partially for Chartered Engineer status.

Reputation (employability rankings): Ranked #11 in Aeronautical and Aerospace Engineering in the UK (The Complete University Guide 2025); graduate average salary £30,000 after 15 months.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

You will gain hands-on experience in Liverpool's excellent engineering and aerospace research laboratories, which support teaching and student projects. The Department is well-equipped with:

  • Full motion flight simulators for realistic pilot training and research

  • A number of wind tunnels, including a new low Reynolds number flow facility (part of the £23m National Wind Tunnel Facility award)

  • A 90,000-litre recirculating water tunnel for advanced fluid dynamics studies

  • HELIFLIGHT-R simulator and large recirculating water channel for aerodynamics and control experiments

  • Flexible heat pump technology and state-of-the-art energy/space research laboratories

  • Practical laboratory sessions and design-build-test projects

  • Two- or three-day flight test course in a Jetstream aircraft (flight data collection and analysis)

  • Final year individual research project

  • Use of the Digital Innovation Facility and collaboration with industry partners

  • Dedicated personal tutors and academic mentors

  • Industry guest lectures and networking opportunities
