Program Overview

University of Manchester MEng Aerospace Engineering with Industrial Experience is a five-year program that combines advanced study in aerospace engineering with a full year of industrial placement on full pay. It is ideal for individuals who want to gain an advantage in the graduate job market through the combination of strong technical training, industry experience, and leadership development through industry-focused projects and placements.

Curriculum structure:

  • Year 1: You’ll start with core modules such as Introduction to Aircraft Design, Fluid Mechanics and Thermodynamics, Mechanics and Materials, and Mathematics. This year builds your foundation in engineering science and practical skills.

  • Year 2: The curriculum advances to Aircraft Performance & Stability, Modelling & Simulation, Space Systems, and Structures. You’ll also complete a short Flight Test Course, gaining hands-on experience with flight dynamics and data analysis.

  • Year 3: You'll build on your Aerospace Propulsion, Control Engineering, Flight Dynamics, and Spacecraft Systems knowledge. There's one project this year, where you apply your skills to actual aerospace problems.

  • Year 4 (Industrial Placement): Acquire experience working within an appropriate aerospace industry for a year, with invaluable professional development, making industry contacts, and applying your academic learning into commercial practice. This placement is fully supported by the university careers team.

  • Year 5: Return to campus to focus on advanced topics such as Helicopters, Acoustics & Advanced Vibrations, and specialist electives. You’ll undertake a substantial group design project that integrates engineering science, commercial awareness, and leadership skills, mirroring industry practice.

Focus areas: Aerodynamics, propulsion, structures, flight dynamics, spacecraft systems, advanced design projects, industrial experience.

Learning outcomes: Complex problem-solving, advanced engineering design, teamwork, leadership, data analysis, project management, professional communication, and industry readiness.

Professional alignment (accreditation): Currently undergoing re-accreditation by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) and Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS); MEng is fully compliant with Chartered Engineer (CEng) registration.

Reputation (employability rankings): 4th in the UK for Aerospace Engineering (QS World Rankings, 2022); 90% in employment or further study within 15 months (Graduate Outcomes Survey).
