BEng Aerospace Engineering

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Nottingham

Program Overview

The BEng Aerospace Engineering at the University of Nottingham is a three-year, on-campus program taught by leading researchers in aviation. You’ll gain a solid foundation in aerodynamics, avionics, flight mechanics, and human factors, with strong industry links to Airbus, Boeing, and Rolls-Royce Aerospace.

Curriculum structure:

  • Year 1: You’ll study core engineering principles, flight physics, and introductory aircraft technology, alongside hands-on design exercises and laboratory work. Modules include mathematics, mechanics, and integrating design-make-test projects.

  • Year 2: You’ll build on your foundation with advanced modules in aerodynamics, avionics, and flight mechanics. Laboratory tests and group projects deepen your practical skills, and you’ll explore systems engineering and human factors.

  • Year 3: You'll undertake an individual research project, core modules in computer modelling, engineering management, certification, safety, and reliability. You may specialise through optional modules in aeromechanics, aeroelectrical, or general aerospace streams.

Focus areas: Aerodynamics, Avionics, Flight Mechanics, Human Factors, Systems Engineering

Learning outcomes: Apply engineering analysis to aerospace systems and aircraft design, use advanced laboratory and computer modelling techniques, manage and communicate technical projects effectively, understand safety, reliability, and certification in aerospace

Professional alignment (accreditation): The Royal Aeronautical Society’s official list (as of August 2023) includes University of Nottingham Aerospace Engineering degrees as being under consideration for accreditation, but does not yet confirm full accreditation for the UK campus.

Reputation (employability rankings): #12 in B.E./B.Tech in the UK, Top 20 in General Engineering, 4th in the UK for General Engineering (Guardian University Guide 2024).

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

You’ll gain practical skills in Nottingham’s outstanding aerospace engineering facilities, designed for hands-on learning and bridging theory with real-world application. The department features industry-standard equipment and collaborative environments for designing, building, and testing aerospace systems. You'll have access to:

  • ALSIM AL250 Flight Simulator: One of the only UK university simulators with bespoke flight models, used in advanced flight dynamics modules and individual projects, plus four Next Level Flight Simulator Cockpits for immersive training

  • Wind Tunnels: First-rate teaching wind tunnels, including a novel closed-return wind tunnel with rolling-road facility, for aerodynamics testing and student-driven UAV/drone projects

  • Space Lab: Satellite tracking facilities, CubeSat simulators, and a magnetic resonance simulator, complementing modules like 'Introduction to Space' and international CubeSat competitions

  • Aerospace Design Studio & Project Design and Make Room: Dedicated facilities for collaborative design, prototyping, and large-scale production via 3D printers

  • Teaching in jet engines and access to specialist research laboratories, including the Aerospace Research Centre and Aircraft Electric Power Systems Innovations Laboratory

  • Institute for Aerospace Technology (IAT): A world-class research institute in support of advanced learning and innovation, with over 400 aerospace professionals and £75 million of projects

  • Guest lectures from industry, company visits, and placement opportunities with Airbus, Boeing, and Rolls-Royce
