Program Overview

The BEng Aerospace Engineering with an Industrial Placement Year at the University of Nottingham is tailored for students passionate about aircraft design, manufacturing, and the science of flight. You’ll learn from leading aviation researchers and gain advanced technical and managerial skills through a blend of academic study and real-world industry experience.

Curriculum structure:

  • Year 1: You will build a solid foundation in aircraft technology and engineering analysis with laboratory and workshop experience. Modules include Laboratory and Workshop Elements, Aircraft Technology, and Engineering Analysis.

  • Year 2: You will expand your technical competence and collaboration skills with modules such as Laboratory Work, Systems Approach, and an Integrating Design-Make-Test Project. There is an increased focus on group problem-solving and real-world applications.

  • Year 3 (Industrial Placement): You'll spend a full year working in the aerospace industry, solving actual engineering challenges and developing professional, technical, and managerial expertise. The university’s dedicated Placements Team will support you throughout the process.

  • Year 4: You'll take on a final-year group design-and-make project and choose from specialist modules in flight physics, airframe design, avionics, or systems, enabling you to tailor your studies to your career goals.

Focus areas: Aircraft Design, Flight Physics, Aerodynamics, Avionics, Systems Integration

Learning outcomes: Advanced technical skills, hands-on engineering experience, project management, collaboration, industry preparedness

Professional alignment (accreditation): The Royal Aeronautical Society’s official list (as of August 2023) includes University of Nottingham Aerospace Engineering degrees as being under consideration for accreditation, but does not yet confirm full accreditation for the UK campus

Reputation (employability rankings): 95% of graduates in work or further study within 15 months. Average salary: £32,500 after 15 months, rising to £38,500 after 5 years.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

You’ll gain practical skills in Nottingham’s outstanding aerospace engineering facilities, designed for hands-on learning and bridging theory with real-world application. The department features industry-standard equipment and collaborative environments for designing, building, and testing aerospace systems. You'll have access to:

  • ALSIM AL250 Flight Simulator: One of the only UK university simulators with bespoke flight models, used in advanced flight dynamics modules and individual projects, plus four Next Level Flight Simulator Cockpits for immersive training

  • Wind Tunnels: First-rate teaching wind tunnels, including a novel closed return wind tunnel with rolling-road facility, for aerodynamics testing and student-driven UAV/drone projects

  • Space Lab: Satellite tracking facilities, CubeSat simulators, and a magnetic resonance simulator, complementing modules like 'Introduction to Space' and international CubeSat competitions

  • Aerospace Design Studio & Project Design and Make Room: Dedicated facilities for collaborative design, prototyping, and large-scale production via 3D printers

  • Teaching in jet engine and access to specialist research laboratories, including the Aerospace Research Centre and Aircraft Electric Power Systems Innovations Laboratory

  • Institute for Aerospace Technology (IAT): A world-class research institute in support of advanced learning and innovation, with over 400 aerospace professionals and £75 million of projects

  • Guest lectures from industry, company visits, and placement opportunities with Airbus, Boeing, and Rolls-Royce
