BEng(Hons) Aerospace Engineering

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of the West of England

Program Overview

UWE Bristol BEng(Hons) Aerospace Engineering is designed together with leading aerospace organizations to provide in-depth awareness of the design and construction aerospace process. It is ideal for students who have an interest in aviation, design engineering, and real-world problem-solving within the advanced learning arena.

Curriculum structure:

  • Year 1: You will be studying Aerospace Engineering, Aerospace Thermofluids, Dynamics Modelling and Simulation, Engineering Practice 1, and Solid Mechanics, Materials and Manufacturing. You consolidate your grounding in core aerospace engineering principles and learn about lab practice in the first year.

  • Year 2: Modules include Aerospace Systems Design, Engineering Practice 2, Engineering Research, Flight, Fundamental Aero-Propulsion, Fundamental Aerodynamics, and Structural Mechanics. You’ll also have the opportunity to specialise in Systems, Design, or Manufacturing pathways and work on embedded project weeks and digital/physical prototypes.

  • Year 3: You will undertake an Aerospace Group Design Project, an individual Engineering Project, and Professionalism for Engineers. Select four optional modules, including Aero Structures, Avionics, Composite Engineering, Control Engineering, Digital Manufacturing in Aerospace, Further Aero-Propulsion, Further Aerodynamics, Integrated Electro-Mechanical Systems, Space Engineering, or Spaceflight, shaping your studies to suit your interests and career aspirations.

Focus areas: Aerodynamics, propulsion, flight mechanics, aerospace systems design, structures, manufacturing, avionics, space engineering.

Learning outcomes: Design and analyse aerospace vehicles, develop and test prototypes, apply computational and experimental methods, and demonstrate teamwork and innovation.

Professional alignment (accreditation): Accredited by the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS); re-accreditation underway for 2025 intake.

Reputation (employability rankings): 86.5% of engineering graduates in work or further study after 15 months; average salary £28,000 (15 months post-graduation).

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

You’ll gain practical skills in UWE Bristol’s new School of Engineering, featuring engine test cells, subsonic and supersonic wind tunnels, manufacturing workshops, and robotics labs. The curriculum includes embedded project weeks, group design projects, and regular factory tours. Access to high-tech equipment and digital resources ensures you’re ready for industry challenges. You will have access to:

  • Engine test cells for propulsion studies

  • Subsonic and supersonic wind tunnels for aerodynamic experiments

  • Robotics prototyping workshops and production workshops

  • Computer-aided design (CAD) studios and digital hubs

  • Electronic fabrication workshops for control systems and printed circuit boards

  • Group and individual design projects using industry-standard equipment

  • Factory visits and presentations from leading aerospace organisations

  • Learning spaces and the selected engineering library support

  • On-site driving simulator to support research into control systems and vehicle dynamics
