BEng(Hons) Aerospace Engineering with Pilot Studies (with Foundation Year)

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of the West of England

Program Overview

The UWE Bristol BEng(Hons) Aerospace Engineering with Pilot Studies (with Foundation Year) is designed for students who want a straightforward entry into aerospace engineering and aviation, irrespective of whether they have an unorthodox academic background. You will gain industry-relevant expertise in both pilot studies and engineering, which will equip you to become an engineer or pursue further pilot training.

Curriculum structure:

  • Foundation Year: You’ll build essential engineering skills through modules in mathematics, mechanics, experimentation, and group projects, ensuring you’re ready for the technical demands of the degree.

  • Year 1: Study materials and manufacturing, stress and dynamics, energy and thermodynamics, and participate in project-based learning such as designing and optimising a model aircraft in the Introduction to Aeronautics module. Laboratory and practical work are integrated throughout.

  • Year 2: Specialise through Systems, Design, or Manufacturing streams. Develop skill in navigation, aviation safety, aircraft instrument systems, and regulations, using real pilot training manuals (not PPL certified). Industry-focused group projects and group activities are a standard part of the year.

  • Year 3: Complete an Engineering Project, an Aerospace Group Design Project, and the Pilot and Airline Operations module. Select two optional modules from Aero Structures, Avionics, Composite Engineering, Control Engineering, Further Aero-Propulsion, Further Aerodynamics, Spaceflight, Space Engineering, Digital Manufacturing in Aerospace, or Integrated Electro-Mechanical Systems. At least 20 hours of flight training with a qualified trainer are required to graduate (additional charge).

Focus areas: Aerodynamics, propulsion, flight mechanics, aerospace vehicle design, navigation, aviation safety, aircraft instrument systems, manufacturing.

Learning outcomes: Design and analyze aerospace vehicles, utilize pilot knowledge to engineer solutions, prototype, integrate aviation safety and regulation, show teamwork and professionalism.

Professional alignment (accreditation): Accredited by the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS); re-accreditation in process for 2025 intake.

Reputation (employability rankings): 86.5% in employment or further study 15 months after graduating. Average graduate salary: £28,000, 15 months after graduation.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

You will learn in the University of the West of England's highly technical School of Engineering, with access to facilities like the flight simulator, engine test beds, and state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities. The program entails project-based education, group design assignments, and a flight testing course in a real aircraft. You must perform a minimum of 20 flying lessons with an instructor trainer through partners such as Wings Alliance (UK) or Northwestern Michigan College (USA). Placements at the top aerospace businesses and regular visits to factory locations make you employable. You will have access to:

  • Flight simulator for flying hours practice

  • Engine test cells for studies on propulsion

  • Subsonic and supersonic wind tunnels for aerodynamic testing

  • Robotics production workshops and robotics labs

  • CAD facilities and computer software

  • Individual and group design projects

  • Professional briefings and factory visits by leading aerospace companies

  • Minimum of 20 hours of practical flying tuition (optional extra cost)

  • Access to specialist engineering library facilities
