Program Overview

The MEng Biomedical Engineering at Swansea University is a 4-year integrated Master’s program with an optional Year in Industry, accredited by both the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) and the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), enabling a direct route to Chartered Engineer (CEng) status. Delivered at the Bay Campus, this program fuses core engineering principles with life sciences, clinical applications, and business innovation.

Through research-led teaching and access to advanced labs in biomechanics, imaging, and instrumentation, students gain practical and theoretical insight into the medical engineering industry. The program includes opportunities to specialize through optional modules in robotics, computational techniques, and tissue engineering, culminating in a major research project in the final year.

Course overview:

  • Year 1: Circuit Analysis, Introduction to Materials Engineering, Engineering Mathematics (Biomedical and Chemical), Human Anatomy

  • Year 2: AI, Machine Learning and Data Analysis, Selected Medical Diagnostic Techniques, Experimental Studies for Medical Engineers

  • Year 3: Tissue Engineering, Computer Aided Product Design, Individual Engineering Project, Medical Imaging & Informatics

  • Year 4 (MEng level): Individual Research Design Project, Advanced Computational Methods for Engineers, Fracture and Fatigue

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

  • Optional Year in Industry in the medical technology sector

  • Group Design Project in Year 2 focused on real-world challenges

  • Major MEng Research Project in Year 4 under academic and/or industrial supervision

  • Industrial visits and guest lectures from professionals in healthcare engineering
