Program Overview

The BEng Biomedical Engineering at the University of Dundee is a 3-year full-time program. Accredited by both the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) and the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), the course partially fulfills the academic requirements for Chartered Engineer (CEng) status.

Students benefit from Dundee’s strong collaboration with NHS Tayside, cutting-edge facilities, and a curriculum that integrates engineering science, biological systems, and medical technology. With a practical, design-led approach, the program prepares graduates to innovate in areas like medical device development and clinical engineering.

Teaching methods include lectures, seminars, tutorials, lab experiments, design assignments, industrial visits, professional training, and various projects.

Methods of assessment consist of coursework, group project reports, lab reports, and written exams.

Course overview:

  • Year 1: Science and Engineering Mathematics, Engineering Project Management, Electromagnetism and Circuits 

  • Year 2: Medical Instrumentation, Introduction to Human Form and Function, Mathematics for Engineers, Electronics and Instrumentation

  • Year 3: Biomedical Signal and Image Processing, Medical Imaging and Surgical Procedures, Biomedical Engineering Design, Surgical Technology and Clinical Environment 

  • Year 4: Advances in Biomedical Engineering Research, Biomedical Engineering Project, Medical Devices and Professional Skills, along with optional modules

 

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

  • Design and Laboratory Projects throughout all years with clinical relevance

  • Individual Final Year Project (design or research-based, often in partnership with industry or NHS)

  • Access to clinical environments through collaborations with NHS Tayside
