BEng Biomedical Engineering

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Hull

Program Overview

The Biomedical Engineering course at Hull equips students with the skills needed for a growing sector, with strong links to the NHS and medical device companies. Accredited and recognized for Chartered Engineer status, it offers excellent career prospects.

  • Focusing on medical device development, tissue engineering, and regenerative medicine, the course blends virtual learning with hands-on experience.
  • Students work with technologies like endoscopy, ultrasound, prosthetics, and conduct physiological measurements (EMG, ECG). Hospital visits provide real-world exposure.

Students can choose from three, four, or five-year options, including integrated Masters (MEng) or a placement year. The first year is shared with other engineering degrees, allowing flexibility to switch pathways.

With 1,200 study hours per year, assessments include exams, coursework, and group projects. The course is taught by professionals, including NHS clinicians, ensuring expert guidance throughout.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

  • Hands-on experience with medical technology, including endoscopy, ultrasound, prosthetics, orthotics, and biomaterials.

  • Practice physiological measurements such as EMG and ECG.

  • Develop dissection skills in the lab to understand human anatomy and medical engineering challenges faced by surgeons.

  • Spend time in local NHS hospitals gaining first-hand experience of biomedical engineering in practice.

  • Access to top labs in the second year.

  • Gain practical exposure by working in different departments of local NHS hospitals.

  • In the final year, undertake a substantial individual project to apply and extend engineering knowledge and professional skills.

Progression & Future Opportunities

  • Pursue a career in medical device development, clinical engineering, biomechanics, biomaterials, rehabilitation engineering, or pharmaceutical technology.

  • Opportunities in industries such as healthcare, medical imaging, diagnostics, prosthetics, and wearable health technologies.

  • Further academic study through taught master's degrees (e.g., MSc Biomedical Engineering, MSc Medical Physics), research degrees (MPhil/PhD), or medical school entry for qualified candidates.

  • Potential to register as a Chartered Engineer (CEng) with an accredited MEng or appropriate combination of BEng and MSc, enhancing professional standing.

  • Entrepreneurial opportunities in health-tech startups or innovation hubs focused on biomedical solutions.
