3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program
This dynamic degree is perfect for students who are natural organisers and want to be at the heart of the construction process, leading teams and turning architectural designs into reality. You'll master the essential skills to plan, coordinate, and deliver construction projects of all sizes safely, on time, and within budget.
Curriculum Structure
Year 1:
Students start with core modules like Professional Skills, Principles of Construction Technology, and Measurement and Site Surveying. They learn how construction works from the ground up — building materials, surveying practices, and fundamental cost and measurement techniques.
Year 2:
Learning expands with modules such as Planning, Estimating & Cost Management, Construction Finance & Risk, and Construction Technology (Infrastructure). Students develop skills in budgeting, risk assessment, and managing construction operations in different environments.
Year 3:
In the final year, students work on advanced topics including Strategic Commercial Management, Integrative Project, and optionally a Sandwich Placement Year. The year emphasizes integrating all learning: managing contracts, leadership, innovation, and working on a major project with real-world relevance.
Focus areas: Project Planning, Commercial Management, Construction Law, Building Information Modelling (BIM), Sustainable Construction, Health and Safety.
Learning outcomes: Plan, execute, and control construction projects; Manage project finances and commercial risk; Apply legal and contractual principles; Lead and coordinate multi-disciplinary teams; Utilise digital technologies like BIM.
Professional alignment: This degree is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB), providing a clear and direct pathway to professional membership after graduation.
Reputation: The University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) has a strong reputation for delivering vocationally focused courses with excellent industry links, ensuring graduates are well-prepared for the workplace.
At UCLan, we believe the best project managers are forged through real-world experience. That's why our course is designed to be intensely practical, immersing you in the challenges and tools you'll use from your first day on the job.
Here’s how you’ll build your practical expertise:
Dedicated BIM and Digital Construction Suite: You'll gain hands-on experience with the software that drives modern construction, including Building Information Modelling (BIM) applications like Revit and project management tools such as Asta Powerproject for programming and planning.
Live Project Simulations: Tackle authentic, complex challenges through compulsory group projects where you'll manage a project from conception to completion, dealing with real-time issues related to cost, risk, programme, and design coordination.
Site Visits and Fieldwork: Apply classroom theory directly to live sites through organised visits to major regional construction projects, observing management practices, health and safety protocols, and modern construction methods in action.
Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Work alongside students from architecture, quantity surveying, and engineering on simulated projects, mirroring the multi-disciplinary team environment that is standard in the industry.
Links with Industry Practitioners: Learn from current project managers through guest lectures and workshops from our network of industry partners, who help ensure the course content remains directly relevant to employer needs.
Graduates typically go into roles like Construction Project Manager, Site Manager, Cost Estimator, Contract Manager, and Facilities or Risk Manager. The course’s strong alignment with industry expectations offers good employability soon after finishing:
University Support: UCLan offers a Careers & Employability Service that helps with placements, employer networking, CV/interview prep, and industrial experience.
Employment Stats & Salary Figures: Median salary ~ £25,000 about 15 months after graduation; this rises to ~ £28,500 after 3 years and ~ £33,500 further on. UniversityGuru
