Cardiff University's BEng Civil Engineering program is a three-year full-time course designed to equip students with the essential knowledge, practical skills, and hands-on experience to become work-ready civil engineers. This program suits individuals passionate about designing, building, and maintaining infrastructure such as buildings, roads, and water systems, emphasizing real-world engineering problems and teamwork.
Curriculum structure
Year One: In your first year you’ll build fundamental skills via Engineering Maths and Computation (EN1211), Fundamentals of Civil Engineering (EN1212), and Applied Design and Practice (EN1217). You’ll engage with lectures, lab sessions and design work to understand how materials behave, basic structural principles, and how engineers solve problems in practice.
Year Two: In year two the focus shifts to more specialized engineering content with modules like Hydraulics and Soil Mechanics (EN2314), Structural Analysis & Design Theory (EN2320), Sustainable Civil Engineering Design & Practice (EN2321), and Engineering Analysis (EN2026). Students also take part in a residential field course in the spring to see how the natural and built environment interact and to apply theory outside the classroom.
Year Three: Your final year includes a major individual Project (EN3300) making up a large portion of assessment, alongside core modules like Construction and Construction Management (EN3104), Water Engineering (EN3303), Geotechnical Engineering (EN3304), and Civil Engineering Design (EN3309), plus a selection of optional modules such as Environmental Hydraulics, Concrete Materials and Structures, or Waste Management and Recycling. You’ll apply theoretical knowledge to real designs, plan, analyse, and tailor your studies toward your interests.
Focus areas: Structural and geotechnical engineering, environmental sustainability, infrastructure planning, surveying, and transport engineering.
Learning outcomes: Develop expertise in design, analysis, and management of civil engineering projects; apply engineering principles to solve complex real-world problems; demonstrate teamwork, communication, and project management skills.
Professional alignment (accreditation) : The program is accredited by the Institution of Civil Engineers, the Institution of Structural Engineers, the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation, and the Institute of Highway Engineers, meeting academic requirements for Incorporated Engineer registration and partially for Chartered Engineer status.
Reputation (employability rankings) Cardiff University ranks within the top 151-200 globally for civil engineering subjects (QS World University Rankings). Graduates have strong employment prospects with major engineering firms like Arup, Ramboll, and Sir Robert McAlpine, securing roles as civil engineers, design engineers, and site engineers nationwide and internationally
This programme is built around a 'design and construct' philosophy, ensuring you develop the practical skills and confidence to excel as a civil engineer from the very start of your career. You'll have access to our outstanding facilities in the Queen's Buildings and our Cardiff Laboratory for Civil and Environmental Engineering, which feature state-of-the-art structures, laboratories, hydraulics flumes, and geotechnics research equipment where you can test designs and understand material behaviour in real-world conditions.
Here’s how you’ll gain practical, industry-relevant experience:
Industry-Standard Software: You'll gain proficiency in essential professional tools including AutoCAD for design and drafting, Revit for Building Information Modelling (BIM), and LUSAS for finite element analysis, ensuring you're industry-ready upon graduation.
Cardiff Design Projects: A key feature of your degree is the series of progressive group design projects where you'll work in teams to solve complex civil engineering problems, developing crucial project management and teamwork skills valued by employers.
Structures Laboratory: You will conduct hands-on experiments in our dedicated structures lab, equipped with a strong floor, reaction wall, and modern loading frames for testing structural components and understanding their real-world performance.
Hydrodynamics Laboratory: You'll use our hydraulics lab with its tilting flumes and wave generation equipment to model water behaviour and environmental processes relevant to civil engineering projects.
Geotechnical Engineering Centre: You'll test soil properties and foundation behaviour using our advanced geotechnical testing equipment, including triaxial testing apparatus and a geotechnical centrifuge, gaining practical insight into ground engineering.
Graduates of Cardiff’s BEng Civil Engineering programme often step confidently into roles such as Civil Engineer, Structural Engineer, Project Manager, or Transport Analyst. Because the course combines technical excellence with real industry insight—through field trips, design projects, and employer engagement—you’ll graduate with both ability and ambition, ready to join leading firms and make an immediate impact.
