The MEng Civil Engineering at Cardiff delivers a full four-year programme combining strong theoretical foundations (in mathematics, structures, fluids, soils) with hands-on design, lab work and fieldwork, giving students the ability to tackle real civil engineering challenges. It’s ideal for students aiming for professional careers in infrastructure, structural design, environmental or water engineering, especially those who want the academic credentials to progress toward Chartered Engineer status.
Curriculum Structure
Year 1
In Year 1, students build essential engineering skills: Engineering Maths and Computation (EN1211) gives mathematical and computational tools; Fundamentals of Civil Engineering (EN1212) introduces the basic physical and structural principles; Applied Design and Practice (EN1217) trains you in engineering drawing, sketching, CAD or model work and problem solving. There are lectures, labs, and practical sessions so you begin early to develop both theory and hands-on ability.
Year 2
Year 2 deepens core civil engineering knowledge and begins letting you choose some optional content: core modules like Hydraulics and Soil Mechanics (EN2314), Structural Analysis & Design Theory (EN2320), Sustainable Civil Engineering Design & Practice (EN2321), Engineering Analysis (EN2026), and Building Modelling (EN2091) cover fluid flow, soil behaviour, structural theory, modelling skills and sustainability in design. You’ll also take field-based work via the Field Studies of the Natural and Built Environment module, giving you hands-on experience in surveying, geology, or environmental context.
Year 3
In the third year, there are core advanced modules plus optional ones that let you tailor your interests. You will do Hydrology and Hydraulics (EN3214), Advanced Structural Analysis and Material Science for Civil Engineering (EN3310), Digital and Computational Architectural, Civil and Environmental Engineering (EN3301); there’s also a significant Project (EN3300) which counts heavily in your assessment. These build your ability to handle complex structural or material behaviour, computational modelling and independent design work.
Year 4
The final year emphasizes professional readiness and specialization. Core modules include Professional Engineering Studies (EN4321), and you pick from optional modules such as Finite Element Theory and Practice (EN4302), Renewable Energy Design (EN4103), Integrated Building Design (EN4102), Steel Structures (EN4573), Flood Design (EN4571), Big Data and AI in Civil Engineering (EN4380), among others. There are group design projects and advanced structural or environmental units so you graduate with depth in your chosen areas.
Focus areas: Structural and geotechnical engineering, environmental sustainability, infrastructure planning, surveying, and transport engineering.
Learning outcomes: Develop expertise in design, analysis, and management of civil engineering projects; apply engineering principles to solve complex real-world problems; demonstrate teamwork, communication, and project management skills.
Professional alignment (accreditation) : The program is accredited by the Institution of Civil Engineers, the Institution of Structural Engineers, the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation, and the Institute of Highway Engineers, meeting academic requirements for Incorporated Engineer registration and partially for Chartered Engineer status.
Reputation (employability rankings) Cardiff University ranks within the top 151-200 globally for civil engineering subjects (QS World University Rankings). Graduates have strong employment prospects with major engineering firms like Arup, Ramboll, and Sir Robert McAlpine, securing roles as civil engineers, design engineers, and site engineers nationwide and internationally
This programme is built around a 'design and construct' philosophy, ensuring you develop the practical skills and confidence to excel as a civil engineer from the very start of your career. You'll have access to our outstanding facilities in the Queen's Buildings and our Cardiff Laboratory for Civil and Environmental Engineering, which feature state-of-the-art structures, laboratories, hydraulics flumes, and geotechnics research equipment where you can test designs and understand material behaviour in real-world conditions.
Here’s how you’ll gain practical, industry-relevant experience:
Industry-Standard Software: You'll gain proficiency in essential professional tools including AutoCAD for design and drafting, Revit for Building Information Modelling (BIM), and LUSAS for finite element analysis, ensuring you're industry-ready upon graduation.
Cardiff Design Projects: A key feature of your degree is the series of progressive group design projects where you'll work in teams to solve complex civil engineering problems, developing crucial project management and teamwork skills valued by employers.
Structures Laboratory: You will conduct hands-on experiments in our dedicated structures lab, equipped with a strong floor, reaction wall, and modern loading frames for testing structural components and understanding their real-world performance.
Hydrodynamics Laboratory: You'll use our hydraulics lab with its tilting flumes and wave generation equipment to model water behaviour and environmental processes relevant to civil engineering projects.
Geotechnical Engineering Centre: You'll test soil properties and foundation behaviour using our advanced geotechnical testing equipment, including triaxial testing apparatus and a geotechnical centrifuge, gaining practical insight into ground engineering.
