BEng/BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Edinburgh Napier University

Program Overview

The Edinburgh Napier University’s BEng/BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering is designed to provide a comprehensive introduction to civil engineering, covering key specialisms including geotechnics, water engineering, structural and hydraulic engineering, environmental engineering, and transportation. This program is ideal for students with a creative, problem-solving mindset who want to develop strong technical, management, and communication skills applicable to a wide range of civil engineering projects.

Curriculum structure

Year 1: Students are introduced to core principles through Civil Engineering Materials, Surveying and Measurement, and Engineering Mathematics, alongside practical design work.

Year 2: Learning advances with Structural Engineering, Hydraulics and Hydrology, and Geotechnics 1, supported by laboratory classes and project-based activities.

Year 3: Knowledge is deepened through Transportation Engineering, Geotechnics 2, and Structural Analysis and Design, focusing on practical applications and sustainable solutions.

Year 4 (Honours Year): Students complete a major Civil Engineering Project and study advanced modules such as Structural Design, Water Resources Engineering, and Project Management, preparing for graduate employment and professional accreditation.

Focus areas

Structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, fluid mechanics, transportation engineering, project management, environmental engineering.

Learning outcomes

Ability to analyse and design civil engineering structures and systems; apply sustainable engineering principles; manage projects; use advanced software tools; communicate effectively; and uphold professional and ethical standards.

Professional alignment (accreditation)

The degree is accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators, which includes the Institution of Civil Engineers, Institution of Structural Engineers, and the Chartered Institution of Highways & Transportation. This accreditation meets the educational requirements for Incorporated Engineer (IEng) and partially for Chartered Engineer (CEng) status.

Reputation (employability rankings)

Edinburgh Napier University is ranked among the top 35 UK universities for civil engineering (Complete University Guide 2020). The course provides excellent industry links, practical experience opportunities including internships and site visits, and strong graduate employability.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

You'll have access to our excellent facilities at our Merchiston campus, which houses modern civil engineering laboratories in the School of Engineering and the Built Environment, including our structures lab, hydraulics equipment, and materials testing facilities where you can test designs and understand material behaviour.

Here’s how you’ll gain practical, industry-relevant experience:

  • Industry-Standard Software: You'll gain proficiency in essential professional tools including AutoCAD for technical drawing, Revit for Building Information Modelling (BIM), and specialist analysis software used in civil engineering design.

  • Edinburgh Design Projects: A key feature of your degree is the series of group design projects where you'll work in teams to solve complex civil engineering problems, developing crucial project management and teamwork skills.

  • Structures Laboratory: You will conduct hands-on experiments in our dedicated structures lab, equipped with modern testing frames and equipment for analysing structural components and material performance.

  • Hydraulics Laboratory: You'll use our hydraulics equipment with flow channels and measurement tools to model water behaviour and environmental processes relevant to civil engineering projects.

  • Geotechnical Engineering Equipment: You'll test soil properties and foundation behaviour using our geotechnical testing apparatus, gaining practical insight into ground engineering principles.

Progression & Future Opportunities

Graduates of the BEng/BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering programme emerge with the foundation to launch a rewarding engineering career—as structural designers, infrastructure project engineers, or transportation planners—and many step into roles with strong starting salaries. These outcomes reflect high employability in the civil engineering sector and a trajectory toward professional registration.

Progression & Future Opportunities:
