BEng Hons in Civil Engineering

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Heriot Watt University Edinburgh

Program Overview

Heriot-Watt University’s BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering program offers a dynamic education designed to equip students with the skills to design, construct, and manage vital infrastructure projects. It is ideal for students passionate about shaping sustainable, efficient, and safe built environments through core studies in materials, structures, geotechnics, water engineering, and transportation.

Curriculum structure

Year 1: In the first year, students are introduced to fundamental engineering principles through courses such as Mechanics A and Civil Engineering Applications 1, establishing a strong foundation in the core areas of civil engineering. Additionally, Construction Technology 1 and Mathematics for Engineers and Scientists 1 are included to enhance practical and mathematical skills essential for engineering practice.

Year 2: The second year delves deeper into civil engineering concepts with courses like Analysis of Determinate Structures and Hydraulics and Hydrology A, building upon the knowledge gained in the first year. Students also study Surveying and Monitoring in the Built and Natural Environment and Mathematics for Engineers and Scientists 3, further developing their technical expertise and analytical abilities.

Year 3: In the third year, students focus on specialised topics such as Design of Steel Elements and Transportation Engineering A, applying their knowledge to real-world engineering challenges. Courses like Geology and Soil Properties and Geotechnics A - Introduction to Soil Mechanics are also included, providing insights into the geological aspects of civil engineering projects.

Year 4: The final year emphasises advanced topics and project-based learning, with courses like Dissertation 1 Civil Engineering Discipline and Geotechnics B - Soil Strength, allowing students to conduct in-depth research and analysis. Students also engage in Transportation Engineering B and Structural Element Design, preparing them for professional practice in the civil engineering field.

Focus areas

Structural engineering, geotechnics, water engineering, transportation engineering, environmental engineering, construction management.

Learning outcomes

Ability to analyse and design complex civil engineering structures; apply engineering principles in environmental and transportation contexts; manage engineering projects; communicate effectively; and incorporate sustainability and safety in engineering solutions.

Professional alignment (accreditation)

Fully accredited by the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE), Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation (CIHT), and the Institute of Highway Engineers (IHE), enabling progression to Chartered Engineer status.

Reputation (employability rankings)

Heriot-Watt University is ranked within the top 151-200 in the QS World University Rankings for civil and structural engineering, with graduates highly employable and sought after by leading firms worldwide.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

You'll have access to excellent facilities at the Edinburgh campus, which include modern civil engineering laboratories, hydraulic benches, and structures testing equipment where you can apply theory to practical challenges.

Here’s how you’ll gain practical, industry-relevant experience:

  • Industry-Standard Software: You'll gain proficiency in essential professional tools, including AutoCAD for technical drawing, Revit for Building Information Modelling (BIM), and specialist analysis software used in civil engineering design.

  • Heriot-Watt Design Projects: A key feature of your degree is the series of group design projects where you'll work in teams to solve complex civil engineering problems, developing crucial project management and teamwork skills.

  • Structures Laboratory: You will conduct hands-on experiments using our modern testing equipment for analysing structural components and understanding material performance under various conditions.

  • Hydraulics Laboratory: You'll use our hydraulic benches and flow measurement equipment to model water behaviour and environmental processes relevant to civil engineering projects.

  • Geotechnical Engineering Equipment: You'll test soil properties and foundation behaviour using our geotechnical testing apparatus, gaining practical insight into ground engineering principles.

Progression & Future Opportunities

Graduates of Heriot-Watt’s BEng Civil Engineering degree frequently launch into roles such as Civil Engineer, Structural Engineer, Geotechnical Engineer, or Infrastructure Project Engineer. Because the programme balances technical rigour—from materials and transport systems to water engineering—with professional-development support and real-world learning.

Let’s explore why Heriot-Watt graduates are so successful:

  • Career Services & Employability Support
You’ll benefit from a culture of support: Heriot-Watt is Scotland’s top university for graduate outcomes, and their Careers & Employability Service backs students with CV workshops, interview prep, job fairs, and career coaching. The University also promotes global readiness through its Go Global programme.

  • Employment Stats & Salary Figures

    • 15 months post-graduation, approximately 84% are working, 4% are studying, and 4% are both.

    • Average salary stands at £28,500, slightly above the UK average of £29,000.

    • Graduates report strong alignment: 75% say their job aligns with future plans, 85% say their work is meaningful, and 95% are in highly skilled roles.

  • University–Industry Partnerships
The programme is guided by a dedicated Industry Advisory Committee composed of representatives from major multinational engineering employers, ensuring curriculum relevance and facilitating work-ready graduates.

  • Accreditation & Long-Term Professional Value
The degree is accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators (ICE, IStructE, CIHT, IHE), meeting the academic standards for Incorporated Engineer (IEng) and partially supporting progress toward Chartered Engineer (CEng).
