University History

Heriot Watt University Edinburgh is a public research university based in Edinburgh, Scotland. The University is known to be one of the oldest as it was founded in the year 1821. The name of the University was taken from two of the famous personalities: James Watt, a Scottish inventor and George Heriot, Scottish Philanthropist and Goldsmith. Heriot Watt University Edinburgh initially started as School of Arts of Edinburgh. The University opened its door for women in 1889 and became a co-ed institution. In 1966, it was granted the University status by the royal charter. The Heriot Watt University Edinburgh came more in the limelight in 1971 when it established the first University Research Park in Europe as an integral part of the campus. Companies came over to build their own research and development laboratories for their research. Heriot-Watt University Edinburgh this year is celebrating its 200th anniversary of its foundation in 1821. The University though started small is now home to students from all around the globe.
