MEng Honours Civil and Structural Engineering

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Newcastle University

Program Overview

The MEng Honours Civil and Structural Engineering course at Newcastle University is a four-year integrated master’s program designed for those passionate about designing, analyzing, and creating safe and innovative structures from bridges to high-rise buildings. The program is ideal for students seeking a direct route to Chartered Engineer status and eager to gain design-intensive training, hands-on laboratory work, and real-world experience for a successful engineering career.

Curriculum Structure

Stage 1 (Year 1):
You’ll get a broad introduction to engineering principles with modules like Engineering Mathematics I, Mechanics I, Properties & Behaviour of Engineering Materials, Thermofluid Mechanics and Introduction to Programming Languages (C, Matlab and Python). From day one you’ll do lab and practical sessions and a residential field trip in the Yorkshire Dales to see how theory meets practice.

Stage 2 (Year 2):
In Stage 2, you move on to more civil engineering-specific content, such as Geotechnics, Hydraulics, Land Traffic and Highways, Design of Sustainable Engineering Systems 2, and Engineering Surveying. You’ll use fieldwork, lab experiments and group design tasks to understand soil behaviour, water flow, and infrastructure layout in real contexts.

Stage 3 (Year 3):
This year begins to specialise you further: you’ll study modules like Design of Building Systems, Foundation Design, Spatial Data Engineering and BIM, Introduction to Architecture, and the Sustainable Engineering Systems Design Project. You’ll apply structural principles more deeply, explore how buildings connect with their systems, and start working on design projects that mirror real challenges.

Stage 4 (Year 4):
In your final year you’ll undertake advanced and specialist modules such as Structural Reliability, Seismic Resistant Design, Structural and Geotechnical Finite Element Analysis, and an Investigative Research Project. This stage lets you pull together all your learning, doing significant independent work and preparing for professional roles in civil or structural engineering.

Focus areas: Structural design, sustainable engineering systems, construction management, seismic design, geotechnical engineering.

Learning outcomes: Mastery in structural and civil engineering design, advanced research and analytical skills, practical industry experience, leadership and teamwork abilities, and readiness for Chartered Engineer (CEng) registration.

Professional alignment (accreditation): The program is accredited by professional bodies including the Institution of Civil Engineers, Institution of Structural Engineers, and Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation, meeting requirements for Chartered Engineer (CEng) status.

Reputation (employability rankings): Newcastle University is ranked in the QS World Top 150 for Civil Engineering, with strong industry links and graduates highly sought after by employers

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

This programme is designed to transform you into a structural engineering specialist through exceptional hands-on experience that bridges advanced theory with professional practice. You'll have access to our world-class facilities in the Cassie Building and our dedicated Dynamics Laboratory, where you'll work with equipment that mirrors professional industry standards.

Here’s how you’ll gain advanced practical experience in structural engineering:

  • Advanced Structural Software: You'll master sophisticated tools including Revit for Building Information Modelling (BIM), ABAQUS for finite element analysis, and Tekla Structures for structural detailing and fabrication, preparing you for complex design challenges.

  • The Newcastle Structural Design Project: A major highlight of your final year is this research-intensive group project, where you'll tackle complex structural engineering challenges, developing crucial leadership and innovative problem-solving skills.

  • Dynamics and Structures Laboratory: You'll conduct experiments in our advanced facilities, which include shake tables for seismic testing and modern loading frames for investigating structural behavior under dynamic loads.

  • Hydrodynamics Laboratory: You'll use our hydraulics lab with its wave generators and flow channels to model complex environmental processes and test maritime structures at an advanced level.

  • Geotechnical Research Centre: You'll work with advanced soil testing equipment and analysis tools, gaining practical insight into ground-structure interaction for complex foundations.
