MEng Honours Civil Engineering

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Newcastle University

Program Overview

The MEng Honours Civil Engineering course at Newcastle University is a four-year integrated master’s program designed for students ready to shape the world through creative, sustainable engineering solutions. This course suits individuals eager for hands-on, design-led learning and a direct pathway to Chartered Engineer (CEng) status, covering advanced topics and real-world challenges such as climate change and infrastructure development.

Curriculum structure:

Stage 1 (Year 1):
You start by building up core engineering knowledge in modules such as Engineering Mathematics I, Mechanics I, Properties & Behaviour of Engineering Materials, and Thermofluid Mechanics. These give you a solid base in how materials behave, how fluids work, and how to apply mathematics in engineering contexts.

Stage 2 (Year 2):
In the second year, the focus shifts towards more civil-engineering specific topics. You’ll study modules like Design of Sustainable Engineering Systems 2, Structural Analysis, Hydraulics, and Geotechnics. You’ll begin working more with design, labs and environmental or infrastructure case studies, which helps you see how theory connects to real infrastructure.

Stage 3 (Year 3):
In your third year you'll deepen your skills in specialist areas and work on an Individual Project that lets you tackle current civil/structural engineering challenges. Modules such as Design of Sustainable Engineering Systems 3, Foundation Design, Design of Building Systems, and Engineering Ethics & Sustainability refine your understanding of structure, sustainability, and professional practice.

Focus areas: Sustainable engineering, structural analysis, geotechnical and environmental engineering, digital engineering, project management.

Learning outcomes: Mastery of civil engineering disciplines, strong analytical and creative design skills, leadership in sustainability, hands-on experience with real-world projects, and readiness for Chartered Engineer (CEng) status.

Professional alignment (accreditation): Accredited by major professional bodies including the Institution of Civil Engineers, meeting the full academic requirements for Chartered Engineer (CEng) registration.

Reputation (employability rankings): Newcastle University is ranked among the top 150 globally for Civil Engineering by QS World University Rankings, and is recognized for its excellent graduate employability and strong industry links.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

This MEng programme is designed to transform you into a future industry leader through exceptional hands-on experience that bridges advanced theory with professional practice. You'll have access to our world-class facilities in the Cassie Building and our dedicated Dynamics Laboratory, where you'll work with equipment that mirrors professional industry standards.

Here’s how you’ll gain advanced practical experience:

  • Advanced Engineering Software: You'll master sophisticated tools including Revit for Building Information Modelling (BIM), ABAQUS for finite element analysis, and Plaxis for advanced geotechnical design, preparing you for complex engineering challenges.

  • The Newcastle Advanced Design Project: A major highlight of your final year is this research-intensive group project, where you'll tackle a complex, industry-relevant challenge, developing crucial leadership and innovative problem-solving skills.

  • Dynamics and Structures Laboratory: You'll conduct experiments in our advanced facilities, which include shake tables for seismic testing and modern loading frames for investigating structural behavior under dynamic loads.

  • Hydrodynamics Laboratory: You'll use our hydraulics lab with its wave generators and flow channels to model complex environmental processes and test maritime structures at an advanced level.

  • Geotechnical Research Centre: You'll work with advanced soil testing equipment and analysis tools, gaining practical insight into ground engineering principles and applications for complex infrastructure projects.
