The MEng Civil Engineering at Swansea gives you a master’s-level education with strong emphasis on design, environmental resilience, and advanced computational and simulation tools. It suits students who want to tackle real infrastructure and environmental engineering challenges, combining theory, lab & field work, and industry-relevant projects.
Curriculum Structure
Year 1: In the first year you’ll build foundational skills: modules like Engineering Mathematics (Aero & Civil), Applied Mechanics (Aero & Civil), Introduction to Civil Engineering Materials and Surveying and Introductory Highways Design give you quantitative, structural, and spatial understanding. You’ll also do Conceptual Design and Analysis Practice and Engineering for People Hackathon, which help you get used to design thinking, problem solving, and working in teams.
Year 2: Year 2 deepens core civil engineering theory and starts linking across disciplines: you study Structural Mechanics, Fluid Mechanics, Civil Engineering Management, Civil Engineering Design & Practice, Soil Mechanics, Transportation, and Geology. These modules help you understand how structures behave, how water flows and soils behave, how engineering management works, and how designs are put into practice.
Year 3: In Year 3 you move into more advanced and specialised topics: expect to take Coastal Processes and Engineering, Hydrology & Unsteady Flow, Finite Elements for Civil Engineers, Superstructure Design, Geomechanics, and an Individual Research Project. This year you begin applying advanced simulation, environmental analysis, and design in more open‐ended projects.
Year 4 (MEng Final Year): The final year pushes you toward professional practice with modules like Advanced Structural Analysis and Design, Flood Risk Management, Earthquake Analysis of Structures, Transportation Engineering, Design and Analysis for Temporary Works, plus a Group Design Project. You’ll be expected to integrate your learning — from structural, environmental, geotechnical, and transport domains — into complex design tasks and simulations.
Focus areas
Structural engineering, fluid mechanics, materials science, surveying, project management.
