MEng Civil and Structural Engineering

5 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Aberdeen

Program Overview

The University of Aberdeen’s MEng Civil and Structural Engineering program provides an advanced and integrated master’s level education for students aiming to excel in both civil and structural engineering fields. This course is perfect for those who want a deep technical understanding, with specialized study in advanced structural analysis, combining fundamental civil engineering skills with cutting-edge structural design techniques.

Curriculum structure

Years 1:
You’ll start by covering core engineering fundamentals: mathematics, mechanics, fluid dynamics and thermodynamics (such as Fluid Mechanics and Thermodynamics EG2004), as well as structural behaviour and materials via Solids and Structures (EA2502), and working with CAD/design tools in Design and Computing in Engineering Practice (EG2501). Lab work, computing and problem-solving are heavily used to build your foundational skills.

Year 2:  Year 2 focuses on strengthening core civil engineering knowledge with modules such as EG2513: Solids and Structures (15 credits), Fluid Mechanics and Thermodynamics (EG2004), Process Engineering (EG2011), and Engineering Mathematics 2 (EG2012)

Year 3:
This year you move deeper into structures and environment, studying modules like Geotechnics 2 (EA40JE), Civil Engineering Hydraulics (EA40JF), and Advanced Structural Analysis (EA4026). Group design projects begin to play a larger role, helping you apply theory to real-world and fluid engineering problems.

Year 4:
You’ll further specialise in structural engineering with more advanced design modules, plus take part in the Group Design Project. You’ll deepen knowledge in structural dynamics, stability, and design of multi-storey or complex structures, integrating sustainability, modelling, and real-world load/material behaviour.

Year 5:
The final year emphasises specialist topics: you’ll take Offshore Structural Design (EA50JG), Structural Vibrations (EG50T9), and complete a MEng Group Design Project (EG5565). Optional modules like Computational Fluid Dynamics, Pipelines and Soil Mechanics, or Riser Systems and Hydrodynamics let you tailor your expertise toward structures, offshore or fluid/soil-related areas.

Focus areas

Structural engineering, civil engineering design, geotechnical engineering, hydraulics, finite element analysis.

Learning outcomes

Ability to critically analyze and design complex structural and civil engineering projects; apply advanced engineering theories and computational techniques; develop leadership, communication, and project management skills; understand sustainability, ethics, and safety in engineering practice.

Professional alignment (accreditation)

Fully accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators, representing the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE), and other bodies, satisfying the educational base for Chartered Engineer (CEng) status.

Reputation (employability rankings)

Ranked 12th in the UK and 1st in Scotland for General Engineering by the Complete University Guide 2024, Aberdeen graduates are highly sought after by employers, benefiting from the program’s strong industry links and practical focus.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

You'll have access to specialised facilities in the Fraser Noble Building and Engineering Laboratories, which feature advanced structures testing equipment, environmental hydraulics apparatus, and geotechnical research tools that mirror professional industry standards.

Here’s how you’ll gain advanced practical experience:

  • Advanced Engineering Software: You'll master sophisticated tools including Revit for Building Information Modelling (BIM), ABAQUS for finite element analysis, and Tekla Structures for structural detailing, preparing you for complex design challenges in professional practice.

  • The Aberdeen Design Project: A major highlight of your final year is this research-intensive group project, where you'll tackle complex, industry-relevant structural and environmental challenges, developing crucial leadership and innovative problem-solving skills.

  • Structures Research Laboratory: You'll conduct advanced experiments in our dedicated structures lab, equipped with modern testing frames and actuators for analyzing structural behaviour under dynamic and extreme loading conditions.

  • Environmental Hydraulics Laboratory: You'll use our advanced flow channels and water measurement equipment to model complex environmental processes, flood dynamics, and hydraulic structures relevant to Scottish conditions.

  • Scottish Field Investigation: The curriculum includes advanced site visits to major Scottish infrastructure projects, coastal engineering sites, and structural landmarks, providing crucial context for your research and design work.
