MEng Civil Engineering

5 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Aberdeen

Program Overview

The MEng Civil Engineering program at the University of Aberdeen offers a comprehensive five-year curriculum designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary for a career in civil engineering. The program is ideal for those aiming to become Chartered Engineers, providing a robust foundation in engineering principles, advanced technical expertise, and practical experience.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1:
In the first year, students are introduced to fundamental engineering concepts through modules such as Principles of Electronics (EG1008), CAD and Communication in Engineering Practice (EG1010), and Fundamentals of Engineering Materials (EG1012). These courses lay the groundwork for understanding electrical systems, engineering design, and material properties essential for civil engineering.

Year 2:
The second year delves deeper into core civil engineering subjects, including Fluid Mechanics and Thermodynamics, Design and Computing in Engineering Practice, and Engineering Mathematics 2. Students also explore The Engineer in Society, which examines the broader impact of engineering solutions on society.

Year 3:
In the third year, students engage with more specialised topics such as Geotechnics 1, Stress Analysis A, Mechanics of Structures, and Design of Structural Elements. These modules focus on the analysis and design of structures, soil mechanics, and the application of engineering principles to real-world problems.

Year 4:
The fourth year emphasises advanced civil engineering concepts, including Geotechnics 2, Civil Engineering Hydraulics, Advanced Structural Design, and Environmental Engineering. Students undertake an Individual Project, allowing them to apply their knowledge to a substantial engineering challenge.

Year 5 (MEng only):
The final year is dedicated to specialised topics such as Offshore Structural Design, Structural Vibrations, and an MEng Group Design Project. Students also choose three elective courses to tailor their learning to specific interests within civil engineering.

Focus areas

Structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, hydraulics, advanced structural analysis, project management, sustainable infrastructure.

Learning outcomes

Ability to analyze and design complex civil engineering projects; apply advanced computational methods; lead and manage engineering teams and projects; integrate sustainability and safety principles into engineering solutions.

Professional alignment (accreditation)

Fully accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators on behalf of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE), and other bodies, meeting the educational requirements for Chartered Engineer (CEng) status.

Reputation (employability rankings)
