BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering (Foundation Entry)

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Central Lancashire

Program Overview

The University of Central Lancashire’s BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering (Foundation Entry) provides an accessible pathway for students who have the capability for a degree but do not yet meet formal entry requirements. This four-year program equips students with core scientific, mathematical, and engineering skills before progressing into the main civil engineering curriculum and is ideal for those seeking a supportive introduction to university study and a future in the sector.

Curriculum structure

Foundation Year
The foundation year provides a solid base in engineering principles, including modules such as: Fundamentals of Engineering Science (S1): Develops fundamental principles of engineering science, introducing basic engineering practice and problem-solving techniques

Year 1
The first year introduces civil engineering principles through Civil Engineering Practice, Engineering Materials, and Structural Mechanics. Students also begin applying theory to practical contexts, including teamwork and lab-based work.

Year 2
Learning progresses to more technical areas such as Soil Mechanics and Geotechnics, Structural Design, and Fluid Dynamics and Hydraulics. Students also gain field experience in surveying, applying key skills to real engineering scenarios.

Year 3
Students explore advanced topics like Transportation Engineering, Structural Analysis and Design, and Hydrology and Water Engineering. They also complete an Individual Project, applying creativity and technical skills to a research or design challenge.

Focus areas

Engineering fundamentals, mathematics, geotechnics, structural engineering, project management, CAD, hydraulics, BIM.

Learning outcomes

Build a strong grounding in engineering, mathematics, and problem-solving; develop skills in design and analysis for civil engineering; use advanced computer and analytical tools; manage engineering projects professionally; specialize in a chosen field such as structural, environmental, or geotechnical engineering.

Professional alignment (accreditation)

The program is accredited and provides the educational base needed for Incorporated Engineer (IEng) and partial Chartered Engineer (CEng) status.

Reputation (employability rankings)

UCLan's strong industry links, state-of-the-art labs, and support structures make this course highly regarded regionally and nationally, with excellent progression rates into industry or higher study.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

This programme is expertly designed to build your practical engineering skills and confidence from the ground up, creating a solid pathway into degree-level studies regardless of your previous background. Your foundation year will introduce you to hands-on learning in our state-of-the-art Engineering Innovation Centre (EIC), where you'll use modern laboratories and workshops to develop core skills before progressing to more advanced civil engineering facilities.

Here’s how you’ll develop your practical engineering skills:

  • Foundation Year Workshops: You'll begin with practical sessions in our engineering laboratories, developing essential hands-on skills through targeted projects and experiments that build engineering intuition.

  • Introductory Software Training: You'll learn fundamental engineering software including AutoCAD for technical drawing and basic modelling tools, building digital skills that prepare you for degree-level studies.

  • Laboratory Introduction: You'll gain early access to our civil engineering facilities, with introductory sessions that help you understand testing procedures and equipment operation in a supported environment.

  • Materials Testing: You'll work with basic concrete and construction materials testing equipment, learning about material properties through hands-on experimentation.

  • Project-Based Learning: Your foundation year includes practical projects that develop problem-solving skills and engineering thinking, preparing you for more complex design challenges in subsequent years.

Progression & Future Opportunities

Graduates of UCLan’s Civil Engineering (with Foundation Year) programme regularly step into meaningful roles such as structural, geotechnical, or transportation engineers, leveraging their practical experience and industry-accredited qualification. With a strong median salary around £29,000 just over a year after graduation, and notable employment outcomes, you'll be set to begin a solid and impactful civil engineering career.

Progression & Future Opportunities:
Let’s break down how UCLan supports your journey—from foundation year to professional readiness:
