Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

This programme is built around a practical, industry-focused approach to learning, ensuring you develop the real-world skills and confidence to excel as a civil engineer from the very start of your career. You'll have access to our excellent facilities at our Medway Campus, which houses modern civil engineering laboratories in the School of Engineering, including our structures lab, hydraulics equipment, and materials testing facilities where you can test designs and understand material behaviour. Your learning is enhanced by industry-standard software and features design projects that address contemporary engineering challenges, giving you valuable experience that employers are looking for.

Here’s how you’ll gain practical, industry-relevant experience:

  • Industry-Standard Software: You'll gain proficiency in essential professional tools including AutoCAD for technical drawing, Revit for Building Information Modelling (BIM), and specialist analysis software used in civil engineering design.

  • Greenwich Design Projects: A key feature of your degree is the series of group design projects where you'll work in teams to solve complex civil engineering problems, developing crucial project management and teamwork skills.

  • Structures Laboratory: You will conduct hands-on experiments in our dedicated structures lab, equipped with modern testing frames and equipment for analysing structural components and material performance.

  • Hydraulics Laboratory: You'll use our hydraulics equipment with flow channels and measurement tools to model water behaviour and environmental processes relevant to civil engineering projects.

  • Geotechnical Engineering Equipment: You'll test soil properties and foundation behaviour using our geotechnical testing apparatus, gaining practical insight into ground engineering principles.

  • Materials Testing Laboratory: You'll work with our concrete and construction materials testing equipment, learning about material properties and performance characteristics through hands-on experimentation.

  • Field Trips: The curriculum includes valuable site visits to major construction projects and infrastructure sites across London and the South East, providing crucial real-world context for your studies.

  • Placement Opportunities: You can choose to take an optional salaried industrial placement year, with dedicated support from the University's Employability and Careers Service to help you secure a role with industry partners.

Progression & Future Opportunities

Graduates from University of Greenwich’s BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering typically land in rewarding roles such as Civil Engineer, Structural Design Coordinator, Water & Infrastructure Consultant, or Transport/Public Works Engineer. Because the course combines practical design modules, hands-on lab sessions, and optional sandwich placements, you'll graduate both technically capable and confidently career-ready.

Here’s how Greenwich supports your professional journey:

  • Career Services & Employability Support
You’ll benefit from a comprehensive employability framework: placements in consulting firms, construction companies, rail, water, highways, and government agencies; structured support with CVs and interviews; and a dedicated Employer Partnerships Manager helping you connect with industry.

  • Employment Stats & Value
While specific graduate stats for this course aren’t published, the programme’s structure—offering sandwich placements and professional exposure—positions you strongly for employment in both public and private sectors.

  • University–Industry Partnerships
The course aligns closely with industry needs, featuring practical learning in fields like construction management, engineering geology, hydraulics, soil mechanics, bridge and concrete design. Greenwich benefits from close ties through its Medway campus and industry-engaged teaching staff.

  • Accreditation & Professional Value
Greenwich's BEng Civil Engineering is professionally accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators (JBM)—covering ICE, IStructE, CIHT, IHE, and PWI. This accreditation meets the academic base for Incorporated Engineer (IEng) and partially satisfies Chartered Engineer (CEng) requirements, with further learning required for full qualification.
