MEng, Civil Engineering with Year in Industry

5 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Liverpool

Program Overview

The MEng in Civil Engineering at Liverpool provides a broad, vocational engineering education that prepares students for designing, managing and constructing infrastructure, with a strong emphasis on sustainability, digital tools, and real-world application. It’s perfect for learners who want both theoretical depth in structures, hydraulics, and geotechnics—and experience addressing environmental & societal challenges through project-based learning.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1: In the first year you lay the groundwork in maths, mechanics, materials and engineering principles. Modules include Engineering Mathematics for CEE (CIVE198), Solids and Structures 1 (ENGG110), Introduction to Engineering Materials (MATS105), Geomechanics 1 (CIVE120), along with Civil & Architectural Engineering Projects (CIVE162) which integrates design, teamwork, and problem solving from the start.

Year 2: Year two moves you deeper into core civil engineering domains and begins combining theory with applied design. You’ll cover Hydraulics (CIVE210), Structural Element Design (CIVE241), Geomechanics 2 (CIVE220), Transportation Engineering & Modelling (CIVE212), and an Environmental Planning & Infrastructure Project (CIVE261). These teach you how infrastructure is planned, how fluids move, how structural components behave, and how designs respond to environmental and infrastructure constraints.

Year 3:During this year, you will undertake a year placement with an approved company/organisation.

Year 4: In year three, you tackle more advanced topics and handle bigger design and management challenges. You study Geotechnical Engineering (CIVE320), Water & Wastewater Treatment (CIVE326), Sustainable Design & Construction Management (CIVE350), and Old Structures of Steel, Timber & Masonry (CIVE334), plus an Individual Project (ENGG341) allowing you to explore a topic of your choice in depth. Optional modules like Earthquake Engineering or Finite Elements let you tailor your interests further.

Year 5: The final year hones your expertise and pulls together all that you’ve learnt into integrated, sophisticated design work. Core modules include Advanced Geomechanics (CIVE420), Structural Systems (CIVE405), Materials for Durable & Sustainable Construction (CIVE401), Advanced Construction Management (CIVE450), and the Capstone: Multidisciplinary Project (CIVE462). You’ll engage with real-life style projects, optimisation of structural design (e.g. via Structural Optimisation ENGG414), and risk/uncertainty theory, all while considering sustainability & durability.

Focus areas (in a string): sustainable infrastructure design • structural & geotechnical systems • hydraulics & water/environmental engineering • materials science for durable construction • digital methods & project-based design •

Learning outcomes (in a string): ability to analyse and design complex civil structures • integrate environmental, sustainability and ethical considerations • manage civil engineering projects • communicate effectively & work in teams • use modelling, lab, field and computational tools with professional judgment •

Professional alignment (accreditation): Accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators (JBM) such that the degree fully satisfies the academic requirements for Chartered Engineer (CEng) registration.

Reputation (employability rankings): The University of Liverpool is well-ranked for civil engineering in UK league tables; Liverpool graduates are known to be in demand by major engineering employers. Many students benefit from industrial projects, internships or optional year abroad to boost employability.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

This programme is built around a 'hands-on' approach to learning, ensuring you develop the practical skills and confidence to excel as a civil engineer from the very start of your career. You'll have access to our excellent facilities in the Harrison Hughes Building, which houses modern civil engineering laboratories, including our structures lab, hydraulics lab, and geotechnics research equipment where you can test designs and understand material behaviour in real-world conditions.

Here’s how you’ll gain practical, industry-relevant experience:

  • Industry-Standard Software: You'll gain proficiency in essential professional tools including AutoCAD for design and drafting, Revit for Building Information Modelling (BIM), and LUSAS for finite element analysis, ensuring you're industry-ready upon graduation.

  • Liverpool Design Projects: A key feature of your degree is the series of group design projects where you'll work in teams to solve complex civil engineering problems, developing crucial project management and teamwork skills valued by employers.

  • Structures Laboratory: You will conduct hands-on experiments in our dedicated structures lab, equipped with modern loading frames and testing equipment, allowing you to test structural components and understand their real-world performance.

  • Hydrodynamics Laboratory: You'll use our hydraulics lab with its flow channels and wave generation equipment to model water behaviour and environmental processes relevant to civil engineering projects.

  • Geotechnical Engineering Equipment: You'll test soil properties and foundation behaviour using our advanced geotechnical testing apparatus, gaining practical insight into ground engineering principles.
