MEng Hons Civil and Structural Engineering

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Liverpool

Program Overview

The MEng (Hons) Civil and Structural Engineering program at the University of Liverpool offers a rigorous education in the design, analysis, and construction of infrastructure, preparing students for professional practice in the civil and structural engineering sectors. The program is ideal for individuals aiming to become Chartered Engineers, providing a blend of theoretical knowledge and practical experience.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1: In the first year, students build a solid foundation in engineering principles. Modules include Engineering Mathematics, Materials Science, Statics and Dynamics, and Introduction to Structural Engineering, focusing on fundamental concepts in mathematics, material properties, and basic structural analysis. Practical skills are developed through laboratory sessions and project-based learning.

Year 2: The second year delves deeper into core civil and structural engineering topics. Students study Structural Analysis, Soil Mechanics, Fluid Mechanics, and Design of Concrete Structures, enhancing their understanding of structural behavior, soil-structure interaction, fluid dynamics, and concrete design principles. Emphasis is placed on applying theoretical knowledge to real-world engineering problems.

Year 3: In the third year, students engage in advanced subjects such as Structural Dynamics, Steel and Timber Design, Geotechnical Engineering, and Water Resources Engineering. These modules explore dynamic behavior of structures, design of steel and timber elements, soil mechanics, and management of water resources. Students also undertake an individual project, allowing them to apply their learning to a specific engineering challenge.

Year 4: The final year focuses on specialized topics and prepares students for professional practice. Modules include Advanced Structural Analysis, Sustainable Construction Practices, Project Management, and Professional Practice in Engineering. Students complete a substantial individual project, demonstrating their ability to integrate and apply their knowledge to complex engineering problems.

Focus areas (in a string): sustainable infrastructure design • structural & geotechnical systems • hydraulics & water/environmental engineering • materials science for durable construction • digital methods & project-based design

Learning outcomes (in a string): ability to analyse and design complex civil structures • integrate environmental, sustainability and ethical considerations • manage civil engineering projects • communicate effectively & work in teams • use modelling, lab, field and computational tools with professional judgment •

Professional alignment (accreditation): Accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators (JBM) such that the degree fully satisfies the academic requirements for Chartered Engineer (CEng) registration.

Reputation (employability rankings): The University of Liverpool is well-ranked for civil engineering in UK league tables; Liverpool graduates are known to be in demand by major engineering employers. Many students benefit from industrial projects, internships or optional year abroad to boost employability.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

This programme is built around a 'hands-on' approach to learning, ensuring you develop the practical skills and confidence to excel as a civil engineer from the very start of your career. You'll have access to our excellent facilities in the Harrison Hughes Building, which houses modern civil engineering laboratories, including our structures lab, hydraulics lab, and geotechnics research equipment where you can test designs and understand material behaviour in real-world conditions.

Here’s how you’ll gain practical, industry-relevant experience:

  • Industry-Standard Software: You'll gain proficiency in essential professional tools including AutoCAD for design and drafting, Revit for Building Information Modelling (BIM), and LUSAS for finite element analysis, ensuring you're industry-ready upon graduation.

  • Liverpool Design Projects: A key feature of your degree is the series of group design projects where you'll work in teams to solve complex civil engineering problems, developing crucial project management and teamwork skills valued by employers.

  • Structures Laboratory: You will conduct hands-on experiments in our dedicated structures lab, equipped with modern loading frames and testing equipment, allowing you to test structural components and understand their real-world performance.

  • Hydrodynamics Laboratory: You'll use our hydraulics lab with its flow channels and wave generation equipment to model water behaviour and environmental processes relevant to civil engineering projects.

  • Geotechnical Engineering Equipment: You'll test soil properties and foundation behaviour using our advanced geotechnical testing apparatus, gaining practical insight into ground engineering principles.

Progression & Future Opportunities

Graduates of the MEng Civil and Structural Engineering program at Liverpool are equipped to enter professional engineering roles with strong technical and project management skills: typical job roles include Structural Engineer, Geotechnical Engineer, Project Engineer, and Environmental Engineer. They are prepared to work across consultancy, construction, infrastructure development, and specialist design sectors.

  • University services: The Careers & Employability Service offers one-to-one guidance, CV and interview preparation, and access to the MyFuture jobs portal; the School of Engineering supports networking events, placement preparation, and mentoring opportunities.

  • Employment stats and salaries: Liverpool engineering graduates have high employability rates, with the majority securing roles in engineering or consultancy shortly after graduation; starting salaries are typically above UK national averages (~£26,000+).

  • University–industry partnerships: Students benefit from links with leading engineering firms, industrial projects, and the Industrial Liaison Committee, which guides teaching and provides networking opportunities.

  • Long-term accreditation value: The program is accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators (JBM), satisfying the academic requirements for Chartered Engineer (CEng) status.

  • Graduation outcomes: Graduates secure positions in major civil, structural, and environmental firms, progressing quickly into specialist, leadership, or chartered roles.

Further Academic Progression:
After graduation, students may pursue a PhD or MRes in civil or structural engineering, or specialist MSc programs in areas such as sustainable construction, structural dynamics, or water and environmental engineering. Some graduates also choose management pathways, including an MBA or project management qualifications, for broader career opportunities.
