Curriculum structure

In Year 1, students develop a fundamental understanding of civil engineering through modules such as Engineering Mathematics, Civil Engineering Materials and Geology, Civil Engineering Construction, Surveying, and Structures E1. This year introduces the basics of structural behavior, materials science, and surveying techniques through practical and theoretical study.

Year 2 focuses on deepening technical expertise with modules including Civil Engineering Mathematics 2, Soil Mechanics E2, Structural Analysis (Structures E2), Design and Construction Management, Highway Design and Analysis, and Fluid Mechanics E2. Students gain insight into more complex engineering principles and their applications in design and management.

In the final year, key modules include Geotechnical Engineering E3, Water Resources E3, Advanced Structural Engineering (Structures E3), Environmental Engineering Case Studies, Finite Element Analysis with Seismic Engineering, and a major Individual Project. This year emphasizes advanced technical knowledge, sustainable engineering practices, and research skills essential for professional practice.

Focus areas

Structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, hydraulics, materials science, construction management, environmental engineering.

Learning outcomes

Acquire skills in structural and geotechnical design, water resource management, and construction planning; analyze and solve engineering problems; use advanced computational tools; manage engineering projects; and communicate effectively with professional stakeholders.

Professional alignment (accreditation)

Accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators (including the ICE and IStructE), fully satisfying the academic requirements for Incorporated Engineer (IEng) status and partially for Chartered Engineer (CEng) progression.

The University of Salford is known for its industry connections, practical learning environment, and excellent graduate employment rates, especially in engineering fields, supported by access to Greater Manchester’s major infrastructure projects.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

This programme is built around a practical, industry-focused approach to learning, ensuring you develop the real-world skills and confidence to excel as a civil engineer from the very start of your career. You'll have access to our outstanding facilities in the Newton Building, which houses our Civil Engineering Laboratories including a heavy structures lab with a strong floor, modern hydraulics equipment, and advanced geotechnics research apparatus. Your learning is enhanced by industry-standard software and features live project briefs from our industry partners, giving you genuine experience of current engineering challenges in the heart of Greater Manchester's major infrastructure region.

Here’s how you’ll gain practical, industry-relevant experience:

  • Industry-Standard Software: You'll gain proficiency in essential professional tools including AutoCAD for technical drawing, Revit for Building Information Modelling (BIM), and LUSAS for finite element analysis, ensuring you're industry-ready upon graduation.

  • Salford Design Projects: A key feature of your degree is the series of group design projects where you'll work in teams to solve complex civil engineering problems, developing crucial project management and teamwork skills valued by employers across the North West.

  • Structures Laboratory: You'll conduct hands-on experiments in our heavy structures lab featuring a strong floor and reaction wall, allowing you to test full-scale structural components and understand their real-world performance.

  • Hydraulics Laboratory: You'll use our hydraulics lab with flow channels and wave generation equipment to model water behaviour and environmental processes relevant to civil engineering projects.

  • Geotechnical Engineering Centre: You'll test soil properties and foundation behaviour using our advanced geotechnical testing apparatus, including triaxial cells and consolidation equipment, gaining practical insight into ground engineering principles.
