BEng Civil & Environmental Engineering

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Strathclyde

Program Overview

The BEng Civil & Environmental Engineering at the University of Strathclyde equips students with the skills to design, build, and manage sustainable infrastructure while addressing global environmental challenges. It suits students who are interested in combining engineering expertise with environmental responsibility, preparing them for careers in civil and environmental sectors.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1: Students are introduced to core engineering principles with modules such as Structural Mechanics, Engineering Materials, and Civil & Environmental Engineering Skills. These provide a strong foundation in mathematics, physics, and design while building problem-solving and teamwork skills.

Year 2: The second year deepens technical knowledge with modules like Hydraulics & Hydrology, Geotechnics, and Structural Engineering. Students also explore Environmental Engineering concepts, developing an understanding of water resources, soil behavior, and sustainable construction practices.

Year 3: Focus shifts to applying knowledge through integrated design projects and advanced subjects. Modules such as Soil Mechanics & Geotechnical Design, Structural Analysis & Design, and Environmental Engineering Systems allow students to tackle real-world problems. Practical laboratory sessions and project-based learning prepare them for professional roles.

Year 4: In the final year, students complete a major Individual Project alongside advanced modules like Civil Engineering Design and Environmental Protection & Management. They also work on group design projects that mimic professional consultancy environments, applying their knowledge to real engineering and sustainability challenges.

Focus areas

Structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, water engineering, environmental engineering, transport and construction.

Learning outcomes

Design and analyze infrastructure projects; apply engineering principles to environmental and transport systems; develop project management and professional communication skills; understand sustainability and resilience in engineering.

Professional alignment (accreditation)

Fully accredited by the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE), Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation (CIHT), and Institute of Highway Engineers (IHE). The program fully satisfies the educational base for Incorporated Engineer (IEng) and partially for Chartered Engineer (CEng) status.

Reputation (employability rankings)

The University of Strathclyde is ranked among the top 151-200 universities globally for civil engineering by QS World Rankings. Graduates are highly regarded and find opportunities with leading engineering firms, supported by the university’s strong industry links and professional mentoring programs.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

This programme is built around a practical, industry-focused approach to learning, ensuring you develop the hands-on skills and confidence to excel as a civil engineer from the very start of your career. You'll have access to our fantastic facilities in the James Weir Building, which houses modern civil engineering laboratories, including our structures lab, hydraulics lab, and materials testing equipment, where you can test designs and understand material behaviour in real-world conditions.

Here’s how you’ll gain practical, industry-relevant experience:

  • Industry-Standard Software: You'll gain proficiency in essential professional tools including AutoCAD for design and drafting, Revit for Building Information Modelling (BIM), and specialist analysis software used in civil engineering design.

  • Strathclyde Design Projects: A key feature of your degree is the series of group design projects where you'll work in teams to solve complex civil engineering problems, often with input from industry partners, developing crucial project management skills.

  • Structures Laboratory: You will conduct hands-on experiments in our dedicated structures lab, equipped with modern testing frames and equipment for analysing structural components and material performance.

  • Hydraulics Laboratory: You'll use our hydraulics lab with its flow channels and measurement equipment to model water behaviour and environmental processes relevant to civil engineering projects.

  • Geotechnical Engineering Equipment: You'll test soil properties and foundation behaviour using our advanced geotechnical testing apparatus, gaining practical insight into ground engineering principles.

Progression & Future Opportunities

Graduates from this degree secure roles such as Civil Engineer, Environmental Consultant, Geotechnical Engineer, or Water Resources Engineer, benefiting from high employability and industry demand:

  • Support: Careers & Employability Service, MyCareerHub, and strong mentoring schemes.

  • Employment stats: Average starting salary around £29,000, increasing significantly with experience.

  • Industry links: Partnerships with major firms like Mott MacDonald, AECOM, and Jacobs.

  • Accreditation: Accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators (JBM), a pathway to Chartered Engineer status.

  • Graduate outcomes: Most students achieve employment or further study within 15 months of graduation.

Further Academic Progression: Graduates may advance to MSc or PhD study in fields such as sustainable infrastructure, environmental engineering, or renewable energy systems.
