MEng Civil & Environmental Engineering

5 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Strathclyde

Program Overview

The MEng Civil & Environmental Engineering at the University of Strathclyde is a five-year, professionally accredited program designed to equip students with the skills to design, construct, and manage sustainable infrastructure systems. This program is ideal for individuals passionate about addressing global challenges related to urban development, environmental sustainability, and infrastructure resilience.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1
In the first year, students establish a strong foundation in core engineering principles. Modules include Mathematics, Engineering Mechanics, Civil Engineering Design, Computing, Professional Skills, and Geology. These courses provide essential knowledge in mathematics, physics, and materials science, alongside developing problem-solving and teamwork skills.

Year 2
The second year deepens technical understanding with modules such as Structural Engineering, Soil Mechanics, Hydraulics & Hydrology, Chemistry & Materials, and Surveying. Students explore the behavior of structures, soil properties, water systems, and materials, preparing them for more advanced studies in subsequent years.

Year 3
In the third year, students focus on integrated design and advanced topics. Modules include Structural Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Water Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Transport Planning & Engineering, and Construction Management. Emphasis is placed on applying theoretical knowledge to real-world engineering challenges.

Year 4
The fourth year emphasizes professional practice and project management. Students undertake a Project Dissertation and study modules like Structural Engineering Design, Geotechnical Engineering Design, Environmental Protection & Management, and Transport Infrastructure. This year prepares students for leadership roles in engineering projects.

Year 5
In the final year, students have the opportunity to specialize in areas of interest. They can select from a range of elective modules across the Faculty of Engineering, including topics on renewable engineering, business and management, and environmental sustainability. A major Design Project allows students to apply their knowledge to complex, real-world problems.

Focus areas

Structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, water engineering, environmental engineering, transport and construction.

Learning outcomes

Design and analyze infrastructure projects; apply engineering principles to environmental and transport systems; develop project management and professional communication skills; understand sustainability and resilience in engineering.

Professional alignment (accreditation)

Fully accredited by the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE), Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation (CIHT), and Institute of Highway Engineers (IHE). The program fully satisfies the educational base for Incorporated Engineer (IEng) and partially for Chartered Engineer (CEng) status.

Reputation (employability rankings)

The University of Strathclyde is ranked among the top 151-200 universities globally for civil engineering by QS World Rankings. Graduates are highly regarded and find opportunities with leading engineering firms, supported by the university’s strong industry links and professional mentoring programs.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

This programme is built around a practical, industry-focused approach to learning, ensuring you develop the hands-on skills and confidence to excel as a civil engineer from the very start of your career. You'll have access to our fantastic facilities in the James Weir Building, which houses modern civil engineering laboratories, including our structures lab, hydraulics lab, and materials testing equipment, where you can test designs and understand material behaviour in real-world conditions.

Here’s how you’ll gain practical, industry-relevant experience:

  • Industry-Standard Software: You'll gain proficiency in essential professional tools including AutoCAD for design and drafting, Revit for Building Information Modelling (BIM), and specialist analysis software used in civil engineering design.

  • Strathclyde Design Projects: A key feature of your degree is the series of group design projects where you'll work in teams to solve complex civil engineering problems, often with input from industry partners, developing crucial project management skills.

  • Structures Laboratory: You will conduct hands-on experiments in our dedicated structures lab, equipped with modern testing frames and equipment for analysing structural components and material performance.

  • Hydraulics Laboratory: You'll use our hydraulics lab with its flow channels and measurement equipment to model water behaviour and environmental processes relevant to civil engineering projects.

  • Geotechnical Engineering Equipment: You'll test soil properties and foundation behaviour using our advanced geotechnical testing apparatus, gaining practical insight into ground engineering principles.

Progression & Future Opportunities

Graduates are highly employable in roles such as Civil Engineer, Environmental Consultant, Structural Engineer, or Water Resources Engineer, entering consultancy, construction, or infrastructure sectors. They benefit from strong industry connections, practical experience, and professional accreditation:

  • University services: Careers & Employability Service provides CV/interview coaching, employer networking, workshops, and access to MyCareerHub.

  • Employment stats & salaries: Median starting salary ~£29,000, rising to ~£36,000 with experience.

  • University–industry partnerships: Projects and placements with firms like Mott MacDonald, Jacobs, BAM Nuttall, Sir Robert McAlpine.

  • Long-term accreditation: Accredited by ICE, IStructE, CIHT & IHE, meeting the educational base for Chartered Engineer (CEng) registration.

  • Graduation outcomes: Nearly all graduates secure employment or further study within 15 months.

Further Academic Progression:
Graduates may continue to MSc or PhD research in structural, geotechnical, environmental, or water engineering, or pursue specialist postgraduate programs in sustainability, transport, or infrastructure management.
