BEng(Hons) Civil Engineering

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of the West of England

Program Overview

The University of the West of England’s (UWE Bristol) BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering is a dynamic and industry-relevant program designed to equip students with the technical and professional skills needed to tackle today’s civil and environmental engineering challenges. It is ideal for students who want to gain expertise in structural design, geotechnics, hydraulics, and sustainable infrastructure, preparing confidently for a professional engineering career.

Curriculum structure

Year 1: Students build foundational knowledge in Engineering Mathematics, Mechanics and Materials, and Civil Engineering Design Project 1. These modules develop core analytical, design, and practical engineering skills.

Year 2: Focus moves to applied engineering with Structural Analysis and Design, Geotechnical Engineering, and Fluid Mechanics and Hydraulics. Laboratory and fieldwork activities connect theory to real-world engineering applications.

Year 3: Students advance with Concrete and Steel Structures, Soil Mechanics, and Transportation Engineering. An Individual Research Project alongside advanced modules like Water Resources Engineering and Sustainable Construction prepares graduates for professional practice and Chartered Engineer (CEng) progression.

Focus areas

Structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, hydraulics, transportation engineering, sustainability, project management.

Learning outcomes

Ability to analyse and design civil engineering structures and infrastructure systems; apply digital, analytical, and practical skills; manage projects with sustainability in mind; communicate engineering solutions effectively; and demonstrate professionalism.

Professional alignment (accreditation)

Accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators (Institution of Civil Engineers, Institution of Structural Engineers, Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation), meeting requirements for Incorporated Engineer (IEng) and partially for Chartered Engineer (CEng) status.

Reputation (employability rankings)

UWE Bristol is renowned for industry connections, strong student satisfaction, and excellent graduate employability. Graduates consistently progress to professional roles across the civil engineering sector.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

This programme is built around a practical, industry-focused approach to learning, ensuring you develop the real-world skills and confidence to excel as a civil engineer from the very start of your career. You'll have access to our excellent facilities at our Frenchay Campus, which houses modern civil engineering laboratories in our School of Engineering, including our structures lab, hydraulics equipment, and materials testing facilities where you can test designs and understand material behaviour.

Here’s how you’ll gain practical, industry-relevant experience:

  • Industry-Standard Software: You'll gain proficiency in essential professional tools including AutoCAD for technical drawing, Revit for Building Information Modelling (BIM), and specialist analysis software used in civil engineering design.

  • Live Project Work: You'll work on real-world briefs set by our industry partners, tackling current civil engineering challenges and developing solutions that meet professional standards.

  • Structures Laboratory: You will conduct hands-on experiments in our dedicated structures lab, equipped with modern testing frames and equipment for analysing structural components and material performance.

  • Hydraulics Laboratory: You'll use our hydraulics equipment with flow channels and measurement tools to model water behaviour and environmental processes relevant to civil engineering projects.

  • Geotechnical Engineering Equipment: You'll test soil properties and foundation behaviour using our geotechnical testing apparatus, gaining practical insight into ground engineering principles.

Progression & Future Opportunities

Graduates are ready for professional roles in civil and structural engineering, project management, and infrastructure development, with positions such as Structural Engineer, Geotechnical Engineer, Transportation Engineer, and Construction Manager. The degree’s professional focus and accreditation support strong career prospects:

  • Career guidance via UWE’s Careers and Employability Service and School of Engineering industry networks.

  • Over 90% of engineering graduates are employed or in further study within 15 months, with starting salaries of £28,000–£35,000.

  • Industry partnerships with companies like Balfour Beatty, Atkins, and Mott MacDonald offer placements and employment pathways.

  • Accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators (JBM), enabling progression toward Chartered Engineer (CEng) status.

  • Graduates contribute to infrastructure and civil projects both nationally and internationally.

Further Academic Progression:
Graduates can pursue a MEng Civil Engineering for advanced study, or postgraduate degrees such as MSc Sustainable Infrastructure or a PhD in Civil or Structural Engineering.
