Program Overview

If you want to study software engineering but don't meet our standard entry requirements, our foundation year could be for you. You'll learn the fundamentals of maths, physics and engineering in a variety of innovative ways to prepare you for your degree.

​The BEng/MEng Software Engineering with a Foundation Year at the University of Sheffield is designed for individuals who aspire to pursue a career in software engineering but do not meet the standard entry requirements. The foundation year focuses on imparting essential knowledge in mathematics, physics, and engineering, equipping students with the foundational skills necessary for success in subsequent degree studies.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

Throughout the program, students engage in practical learning experiences that bridge theoretical knowledge with real-world application. In the initial years, core modules cover fundamental topics such as programming, algorithms, and data structures. As students progress, they have opportunities to work on real-world projects, including participation in Software Hut, where they develop software solutions for actual clients in a competitive environment. Additionally, MEng students may join Genesys Solutions, the UK's first student-run software development organization, gaining experience in agile software engineering and lean startup practices.

Progression & Future Opportunities

Graduates of the program are well-prepared for diverse roles in the technology sector, including positions such as software developer, systems analyst, and IT consultant. The University of Sheffield's Department of Computer Science is recognized for its strong industry links, offering students exposure to leading technology companies. The program is accredited by the British Computer Society (BCS), fully meeting the requirements for Chartered Information Technology Professional (CITP) status and partially meeting the requirements for Chartered Engineer (CEng) status.
